Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

You can do it. Cliff Ruggles has an excellent book that explains the carburetor and how to get the most out of it. He also sells parts that are designed for use with ethanol-blended fuel.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

uggghhhh....I tried. I ended up sending mine out to get rebuilt. Cliff High Performance is a popular choice. I used a shop down in Southern Cal, SMI. Did a great job on mine, cost $350

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

I am far from a "carb guy" but have built several Q-jet over the years. They can be overwhelming, especially if you aren't into carbs. Cliff's book is an excellent resource, and not just for advanced builders either.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

I rebuilt the original quad on my '72 C10 last weekend. It had been over ten years since I rebuilt the quad on my corvette. I disassembled on Friday night and let the parts soak over night. I used the same gallon can of cleaner from before(its been on the shelf). Put it back together in the morning. All total $46 with buying a new float. It made an amazing difference. If you decide to do the rebuild, take lots and lots of pics during disassembly, make notes, and have a service manual handy.

Be carefull with those youtube vids. Most I've watched hook the needle on the float wrong.
They might help with a visual but aren't sometimes technically accurate.

x2. Alot of the youtube vids offer little, to no accurate info, there a few good ones, just be ready sort through a bunch of them. Also there is a lot more to rebuilding these carbs then just getting a gasket kit from the parts store. Getting all of the linkages and rods adujusted (bent) properly, and functioning smoothly will be your biggest challenge.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

Not quite ready to do it myself. Has anyone had their carb rebuilt from Mountain Man Fuel System from ebay? There quoting me $175 while others have quoted $340+.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

Rebuilding your carb the first time can be a bit scary, but if you take your time you can deffinately do it yourself. Plus you will have a better understanding of how your fuel delivery system works. When my frankenquad bit the dust, i bought a remaned q-jet from rock auto for $225 that has had no problems yet.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

If you are handy at all, get Cliff's book and go at it. Q-Jets are actually pretty simple, if you aren't trying to hot rod them. Then, you need some expertise that only comes from making mistakes and learning from them.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

Who ever does it, make sure the process includes rebushing the control rods. Re: cost... remember, nobody rides for free.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

Luis...what model of Quadrajet do you need to rebuild?
This is not an extremely difficult process but without having some knowledge and skill it is best left up to the experts.
If you have those....well let us know and maybe we can help you out a bit.
Don't start this kind of task without getting good information and doing some research first (note the reference to Cliff Ruggles book + there are some others). Plus, some quadrajets are great candidates for rebuild...and some aren't.
Coley
....if you get a chance, follow this guy through his rebuild and see if it might work for you:

They are not all the same so you need to figure out what differences you would need to consider...but some good basic info here, although he does not rebush the shafts.

Re: Q-Jet rebuild?

Thecarbshop.com. They are located in Anaheim. Prices will vary on whether you are getting restored (rebuild with replating) or just rebuilt. Hope this helps as nobody else seems to be answering your question.
