Windshield to roof panel

1964 short step. How does the windshield to roof panel come off? Mine has a hole in it & has to be replaced. Also is there a patch panel for it?

The outer windshield panel is spot welded to the A pillars and to the inner roof panel at the windshield lip. There are some extra support pieces in the front corners, but I don't remember if they are attached to the center panel. There is a aftermarket replacement panel that is marketed for the '60-'63's, but I have heard that it also works for the '64-'66's. Top Banana Parts is one of the forum favorites for body panels. I'm not sure if the forum discount still applies. It might be worth inquiring about.

My 66 has the same rust in the same place. I'm no body man, only done some research on how to get this fixed on my truck.

Option 1
To properly replace this panel with a new piece, it appears to me the roof skin has to come off (approx. 150 spot welds I've heard) to access the spot welds on the ends. You can see what all it involves here.

It's not too awfully difficult if you can remove spot welds and weld the roof skin back on. There are advantages to doing this as you can also remove other rust between the roof skins and insulate the top better while in there.

My truck also has some rust thru on the inside right above the windshield from the same rust that also got the outside panel. Without removing the roof skin, completely ridding this area of rust might be difficult. I'd hate to find any hidden rust pop back thru after I've repainted the interior because I didn't get all the rust removed the first time around.

Option 2
Cut the rusted panel as close to the seam as possible and weld in the new replacement panel. This will fill in the seams on the ends.

Option 3
Buy the replacement panel and use it to patch the hole(s) and leave as much of the original panel that is still solid.

As mentioned above, the replacement panel is listed for the 60-63 body but I've heard it also fits the 64-66 too. I can't confirm this myself.

Started reworking ours. Drilled out spot welds across front roof drip edge and windshield seam. Not much left of the edges where they meet the A pillar. Plan is to weld the replacement solid to the A pillar and create a seamless installation. I have read that the replacement will require a filler strip either at both ends or in the middle. Waiting on delivery from Top Banana.
