Coolant Temp Sensor??
I am switching over my idiot cluster in my 71 to a cluster with the oil pressure and temp gauge. Can anyone tell me if the sensor that operates the idiot light is the same as the one that works with my gauge or do I need a different one. Anyone know what the part number of the one I need?

The gauge sender is different than the idiot light sensor.

It is not the same. The idiot light uses a switch that turns the light on at a preset temperature. The gauge uses a variable resistance sending unit that gives a ground to your gauge with varying resistance depending on the engine temperature.
The good news is that you can just unscrew the old one and install the new one in the same port. Your part number is ACDelco G1852. Rockauto has them for 14.30 Amazon has it for 16.09 OReilly has it for 22.99 And they're all over eBay for 13-20 dollars.

I did some research and have heard that there's only 2 types of sensors that are truly accurate... a Delco NOS sensor, and the $10 TU-5 switch from Autozone (Duralast). What I've read is that anything else - even a new Delco unit, gives a false reading.
