Popping sound when braking - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This problem has been around since I bought my truck about a month ago.

This always happens the first time I brake going forward after I have gone in reverse and hit the brakes. And, it only does it once. It happens as soon as I hit the brakes. It sounds to me that it's coming from the passenger side front brake (but not absolutely sure).

Does anyone have a clue what this could be? I haven't had time to look at the brakes, but I should this week sometime. What should I look for?

yUP... Its your pads locking into the stops on the caliper. mine did that too. NOthing you cant fix if it bothers you. Just put some high temp silicone on the tips of them that will work as a buffer and you will not hear them pop anymore.

Mine does the same thing except it squeaks instead of poping.

Sound effects would be nice on here.

On my Cutlass I had kind of the same scenario. If you backed up and stepped on the brakes you would here a "clunk" when you went ahead and stepped on the brakes, it would clunk again.

I had checked everything and not a thing looked wrong. Until I decided to upgrade the suspension bushings. One of the lower control arm bushings seized in the rubber causing the metal shell to rotate on the bolt going through there. Must've been like that for a LONG time because the bolt was worn half way through! Thank goodness I decided to upgrade the suspension!

Well, I guess I need to replace some of my front-end bushings it sounds like. Do they sell these in a kit?

I found my kit at http://www.p-s-t.com/ and was very happy with the product and the fit. I got the polyurethane set and also got a sway bar through them as well.

Not to confuse you even more but your rear brakes could also be causing the noise if one of the adjusters is bound up where it won't turn and the self adjuster is popping when you pull forward.

Yeah, rear brakes were my first thought but I'm pretty sure it's coming from the front passenger side.

Popping noises on these trucks seem to never quit. I think most will remember me chasing a popping noise I had in my truck. I have replaced every part in the suspension and bushings, cab/core support bushings, motor/tranny mounts, steering box, every piece you can think of. My popping noise started off doing it every once in a while and was progressively doing it more often. New brakes front and back didn't stop it either. After replacing every suspension part and bushing, it still did it. It got worse and worse.

It was weird. If you were turning to the right while braking, it would pop. Turn to the right again, no pop. But, turn left the next time, it would pop. It got worse. About drove me nuts. I checked everything I could think of. Found nothing. I finally gave up and said whatever it is will quit when it falls off.

Well, it has just about quit by itself. It only pops slightly. To tell you the truth, I can't remember when I've heard it. It was popping at every turn. I have no idea what it is or was. Only thing I can think of, may be is a loose frame rivet or the like. I checked them all and didn't see any evidence, but stranger things have happened. I'm just glad whatever it is has about stopped.

Im tellin ya....will bet you money its the pads hitting the stops.

take the wheel off and grab the pad and move it back and forth.you will hear the noise.
