Question for all the guys that did the 5 lug axle swap
I have my Moser Engineering 5 lug axles to put in my '68 but what else do I need? I'm talking mainly consumables here but really anything. I know I need a differential cover gasket, but how much fluid will need to be added afterwards? Do I need any kind of axle lube or assembly grease? do the axle bearing need replacing or repacking? I don't want to get it tore apart only to realize i needed to order bearings or find some rare gear lube or something. I did a search with no luck.

I know if it's a posi rear end you need to get the posi additive. my mechanic buddy ordered what I needed to change the fluid in my rearend and he got me 3 qt's 80 90 gear oil and 1 tube of sta lube equa-torque differential friction modifier.

I replaced the seals and axel bearings when I did mine. Really easy to do it at the same time. its also nice to have new bearings to match new axels. A bearing puller is handy to have. check out youtube there are some videos on bearing replacement
My axels did not come with studs just in case you didn't know that.

if you have a posi trac rear end you have to add an additive to the gear oil so the clutches in the rear end can slip. you pour it in before the gear lube. that brand is from napa or you can get genuine gm posi additive from your local chevy dealer.

side not I wrote exactly what the bottle says it's called I promise it's not a muffler bearing or blinker fluid prank that is actually the name on the bottle.

I would at least do the seals while your in there. Currently I am currently doing the Moser swap but with a ring and pinion change too.

Thanks for the great tips guys, as far as I know, I do not have a posi rear end. Any more tips? How much fluid do I need on hand?

Absolutely best time to replace bearings, seals and races. Also a good time to inspect the ring and pinion for chipped or broken teeth.

Use the GM posi additive, if possible, I know it DOES work...
I'm tight w/ a buck as anyone, but the bearings need replacing for your new axles. Usually you need a slide hammer w/ 3 fingers or the special attachment for that size bearing...these can be rented. Do you have 5 hole drums yet??? Any 11X2 drum fron 71-86 will work. Ther is also a 11-5/32X2-3/4 drum that was used from 74-86 also, make sure you don't get these, they will NOT work. They will not slide all the way on.... I prefer silicone sealer to a gasket. Run a 1/4 bead around the cover, the make circles around the bolt holes. Let it dry completely before installing. You can remove the cover easily, next time, easily scrape off the silicone, and do it again, if needed!!! I hoping to do this to my 68, also, I'll NEVER drive it again w/ those stupid front drum brakes!!! |

Buy 2 quarts, I am pretty sure they take about a quart and a half to the plug.
