So every time I try and put it in either 4 hi or 4 lo it grinds terrible. I have it in neutral and even got my foot on brake pedal and still no change. I've done everything I know and can't figure it out. I'm bout ready to set the truck on fire Please help me. Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: 84 k10 keeps grinding when when I put in 4x4... Please help!!!

Countless times, I've had the transfer case grind moving between 4hi / 4low. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. If its real bad I will turn the truck off, shift into the desired gear and restart the truck and move on. Just an idea...

Sometimes it will split in easier if youre rolling a little instead of a complete stop

wow, never had an issue in my '83 since I installed Warn hubs on the front. With the hubs locked I can shift into 4H at a stop, rolling, or at speed; and 4L stopped, trans out of gear.

Getting into 4L always grinds for me. Helps if being done on grass or other non hard top surface. I have shut the truck off as others have too.

Re: 84 k10 keeps grinding when when I put in 4x4... Please help!!!

I've always shut the truck off going into 4low due to the grinding too.
Not high though. When shifting from 2 to 4hi, the case is not shifting through neutral, so it should not grind unless your rear wheels are spinning at a different rate than your fronts.

And if you have to hold 4 lo into place something is definately wrong. First order would be to check you linkages for sloppy-ness, bent linkages or out of adjustment. If you dropped the T case due to the lift or had the cab settle, that could change the linkage adjustment.

NP208? Mine had the shift forks wear through and I was stuck in neutral. I've heard they are a pain to do, so I put a low mileage replacement case in my 83(like 18 years ago).
