VIN Number Help

All,

I have an interesting predicament that I just discovered. I bought a 69 C10 Stepside about 6 weeks ago. Matched VIN with title when I bought it. Last night I was looking up the block model and decided to look at the VIN. The VIN inside the drivers door indicates it is a 72 model. Starts out CCE142A. I looked at the VIN on the frame rail this morning and it was 9T834424 which indicates it is a 69. Everything on the truck is 69 from the grill to the metal door inserts. I am confused. It is registered and insured as a 69. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Re: VIN Number Help

You say you matched VIN with title when you bought it. What VIN did you use?
Do you have the glove box door with the SPID on it? Post up a pic of the door VIN and the SPID (if you have it).

Any evidence of a cab swap?

Re: VIN Number Help

Yes I matched the Title to the VIN inside the drivers door. Don't see any evidence of a cab swap. It looks like a 69 cab to me. The guy I bought it from only had it about a year. Searched the VIN and I saw where the guy he bought it from was selling it. I far as I know this all could have been done back in the 70's! It has been painted in the last 3 or 4 years and I am positive the data plate was removed, jambs painted and then riveted back on. Nothing in glove box...it is new.

Re: VIN Number Help

I don't understand how you could have matched the VIN when you bought it and it changed?

The frame VIN is not the easier of the 2 to look at so I am assuming you matched the cab VIN.

Technically if the title is for the VIN plate on the cab you should be ok, but if it doesn't you may be SOL.

Even if the title matches the VIN plate on the cab I would still question the seller about the cab swap.

It didn't change. I matched the VIN on the title with the CAB VIN. I didn't decode the VIN at the time or do anything but match it to the title. I was research the small block version that I have last night and decided to decode the VIN and that is when I discovered that it was a 72 VIN. I checked the frame VIN this morning and it is a 69 VIN. It was sold to me as a 69.

Re: VIN Number Help

The VIN has been swapped, wrong rivets. If it is registered and tagged already you should be ok. Different story when you go to sell it.

This is where I was confused too. I thought it was sold as a 1969?

Does the title match the plate?

Re: VIN Number Help

When you bought it was it inspected by your DMV? I doubt it because if they did the vin rivets are a dead giveaway. Its probably been registered as such for a very long time, I wouldn't even worry about it.

Re: VIN Number Help

No not inspected by the DMV. They confirmed VIN with title and that was it. Trying to find out who did that part of the restoration but that was about 3 owners ago. Have never ever before decoded VIN before I bought something. Won't happen again. Thanks everyone.
