Re: Where do I find this phantom grill?

I bought one of the ebay $100 ones a year or so ago. Polished on the front only. top, bottom and back of the bars I think are powered coated black. Fit wasn't too bad, I think my lower metal piece behind the bumper has some tweeking to it so make fitting it a bit difficult. Truck has 3" body lift thats why so much shows above the front bumper. Heres a picture.

Re: Where do I find this phantom grill?

I have had mine for years and I put one in my Son's 86 truck. They are a loy more versatile than the factory plastic and last a long time, too.

Just go to Summit Racing and they have billet grilles. Mine came from another supplier, but my Son's came from Summit.

Re: Where do I find this phantom grill?

These trucks open from inside the cab and then when loosened the hood secondary latch is easy to get ahold of.

Anybody have one of these or equivalent on their early square? How do you get the hood open?

81-87 You pull the handle from the inside of the cab and instead of sticking your hand through the grill on the front for the latch, you let the hood come up some and you pull the latch from the top of the rad support(gap between hood and rad support)

I understand, but the ebay unit I linked to is specifically for the early squares without the internal hood release. HTH do you get the thing open???

If you have an earlier model of this truck line (73-79), then the hood latch is behind the grille and there would have to be some mods performed to get this type of grille installed. Also, the round headlights may protrude to far out to let this type of grille be installed. You would have to be a little bit of an engineer to redesign your front grille area for this type of grille. The 1980 models and later had square headlights, and a hood latch that is actuated from inside the cab which gives this grille addition plenty of room to be used. I imagine that all of us can think of a way to fit the grille onto a truck, it is up to you to how smooth your design would be.

I know all that. You didn't look at the ebay link. This is a replacement grill similar to the ones above, but it only fills the grill area on the older models -- it doesn't cover the headlights. I'm just wondering how you get the hood open.

Two things come to mind. One, the latch can be reached by sliding your fingers through the grille. That would be tight. Two, the latch can be reached with a bent hook, or the latch is changed out for one that goes into the cab.

It would probably only work on the trucks with the internal hood release option, without modifying. However I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to cut out the area needed for one with an external release.
