Re: tittle question
If you use the 72 GMC cab you use the 72 GMC title, swapping vins is frowned upon in a lot of states, or say illegal.

Re: tittle question
It's called title washing. Boyd Coddington narrowly escaped a prison sentence for doing it. If you get caught you not only lose the truck but you get free meals and housing courtesy of the state you live in.

Re: tittle question
I cant give you legal advice. However asking on this or any other forum isn't the proper way to obtain legal advice. I would check with local authorities. Whatever you do make sure its legal.

Re: tittle question
The crappy part about doing it legally is I think a deal fell through on me selling my truck because I did it the legal way through DOT. He questioned what the sticker was about and I told him, and then he went cold on the deal. He wanted to see the title which I didn't have with me, to see what it looked like. BTW it is a clean title not a salvage title.

Re: tittle question
Legally, the VIN goes with the cab. It is illegal to remove the VIN plate from the door jam. Whether you choose to follow that is up to you...
I removed my VIN plate when my truck was painted.

Re: tittle question
Thats what i was afraid of my truck is a 72 chevy swb and the cab is either a 71 or 72 gmc long bed so if i used that title it wouldnt match my truck right? I could always cut and weld the parts i need but its alot more work and a bit over my experience level

laws vary greatly from state to state. You can always ask questions at the local registration place.

Re: tittle question
Fyi there are slight variations between 71 and 72 cans such as the inside rear view mirror mount and accelerator pedal mount.

Re: tittle question
Been there done that, in Texas I had the title to the frame and a sales receipt from a salvage yard for the cab, bed, engine etc. When I took it for inspection at TxDot they used the frame numbers because of the title matching it. And the documentation that when to Austin list the cab numbers on it there. They installed a sticker next to the cab vin plate documenting that it is inspected and legal.
It's no big deal about the cab vin plate being from a longed truck, GMC or whatever the variables are.

Re: title question
I asked on here a little while back about the Rosette Rivets to remove/replace the VIN plate on my 67... What I found out was shocking... Even though I wanted to just R&R the vin plate to paint it, It is illegal in all 50 States... Even possessing the rosette rivets is illegal and you can be arrested on criminal charges... so I am painting around the VIN Plate...
From all I can see the information tlcrz1972 gave on changing the cab pretty much is the way it is in all 50 states... ALWAYS check with the state you live in to make sure you don't make a error that can cost you your truck... Also in buying one of these trucks that have been put together from several trucks make sure it can be titled in your state... These are just my experience/ opinion and your thoughts may be different...
