SEM interior paint/dye
I need to repaint my door panels on my 85 GMC. It is the factory blue.
Does this match pretty well? http://www.classicparts.com/1973-98-.../#.U5fQVyIo6M8 I have also seen the colorbond brand. Hard to tell looking at the paint chips online whether or not the color is right |

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
I'm actually trying to tackle this issue right now in my blazer.
As I recall when I went into napa they had SEM dark blue there but it didn't look to match very close at all to the blue of my trim panels. I will look into getting some colorbond and see if I can figure this out unless someone else has gone through this trouble?

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
SEM Shadow Blue, my interior is the same dark blue and it's a perfect match. I did mine about 2 years ago. I bought the SEM Shadow Blue Color Coat at my local paint supplier (English Color) for $12 per can. Cleaning and prep is the most important step. First I mixed in Clorox with a large bucket of very soapy water and used a scuff pad to clean every inch of each piece and then rinsed thoroughly. I repeated this process 4 times for each piece. Next I dried off each piece with a lint free microfiber towel. Then I thoroughly cleaned all pieces once again using automotive grade lacquer thinner making sure to only wipe in one direction to keep from spreading the leftover residue. After all this was complete, I let everything sit and dry for 24 hours. Once it was ready for paint I did 2 light coats of Bulldog adhesion promoter with 5 mins between coats. Finally I used the SEM color coats and sprayed 6 lights coats on each piece with 5 mins flash/dry time between coats. I let everything set for a few days to make sure it was completely dry before I begin re-installing.

I scrubbed and scrubbed my new dash before painting. Still got a little de-lamination at the corner of the instrument cluster. Everything else looks good but didn't like to see that when I first installed the dash. It has to be super clean....

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
Not sure on the color match but I used the SEM product on my seat and was very impressed with the turnout. I went with black though.
I bought mine from a auto paint supply store and they carried just about every color in stock.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
its a bit darker because the original pieces have faded over the years.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
I don't think the paint underneath the trim faded this light. Front and back on all my trim match. I've used SEM on many other things and they match even better to other faded colors. I think this tint of SEM is not a good match although it's better than any other blue they make. I'm going to try some colorbond but I will run this in the meantime.

If only SEM made the medium blue. It's pretty aggravating to own an interior color SEM doesn't sell.

You think color bond has a match?

I hear you on that. I can't find anything that matches my Holly Green interior.

I used the Shadow Blue as well on my 85. Perfect match. Be sure to use their prep/cleaner first.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
x2 on the medium blue...supposedly there is a corvette blue color that is a close match but I've not seen anything in the standard colors that match. I had it custom matched one time, that worked ok but it take more time and more money.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
Do we have more pics of Shadow Blue, or the other SEM Blues?
I'm trying to see what blue I'd like to go with.

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
It's weird how different camera shots in different lighting changes the look of Shadow Blue.
Here's a thread from another forum with lots of pics; http://www.celicasupra.com/forums/sh...tion-True-Blue

Re: SEM interior paint/dye
You won't go to Wal Mart or AutoZone to buy this kind of stuff.
A buddy had the Smyth Automotive paint store in Cincinnati mix a color in SEM dye. He needed to color match some replacement interior parts, on his project '88 Supra, to the originals. They were a really dark red and the rattle cans just didn't match well enough. He sprayed it through a regular paint gun. You should be able to do the same at any large automotive paint store.
