5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
Given my DD is a BMW M3 and I dont drive like most around corners..
Ive noticed with 1/2 a tank if i hit a corner with some speed i get starvation issues. Anyone else notice a problem..? Like baffles were not installed. |

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
You should be able to look at the bottom of the tank and see if baffles have been installled (distortion of the metal). How old is your tank? Are you running an internal pump? What is your fuel pressure set at?

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
I would start by verifying the fuel pressure at the rail, although it does sound like a feed problem. Are you running the corvette FPR? When I talk about distortion, it's very minor, but on mine you can see where the baffles are welded to the bottom of the tank (I have the Boyds A1000 tank).

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
Does it have a return line? First thing is to check the fuel pressure.

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
Boyd 67-72 EFI tanks have 2 or 3 baffles in them.. you should be able to tell from the outside via just the vertical interior welding marks distorting the outside appearance just slightly....

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
Regular baffles control sloshing, but won't do a thing for fuel starvation beyond delaying it a half a second. Think how fast all the fuel can get to the other end of a normal baffled tank if you tip one end up a foot.
You need an intank sump (or external surge tank) like most factory efi cars have (the white plastic basket design is common). I have good results building a one or two quart container with a ~3/8" hole in a bottom corner to let fuel in. The ones I make run almost to the top of the tank. For over 300hp or extreme cornering I would use trap doors rather than a small hole. That coupled with the return line dumping back into the sump has worked very well for me.

Re: 5.3 with Boyd tank issues.
3/8 feed and return nylon tube.
I'll tape a gauge to the windshield. its been running great, 100miles a day for 2 weeks. my OBD2 port has a problem connecting.. guess i need to figure that out and pull a code. Last edited by Windsma; 06-13-2014 at 11:09 AM. |
