Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
My 91 crew cab has the trademark GM peeling paint and has already been repainted once. The 'new' paint is coming off in nice big chunks along with the original paint right down to the bare metal. Some pics can be seen in my build thread.
1) Do I need to strip the whole truck down to bare metal before the next repaint? Or is there a way to strip the stuff that is about to flake (pressure washer, chemical, mechanical etc) and then go from there? 2) The hood and roof have been peeled long enough that there is some surface rust. What can I do to protect these areas and keep it from getting worse that won't have to be undone when it comes time for final paint? 3) What should I be looking for in a paint system for the permanent fix? Single stage or clear coat too? For color I'm going to use a GM grey from a later model application so it is easier to touch up when it gets scratched etc. truck is a driver and will be used, not a show piece. That being said I do intend to keep the truck for a very long time. Thanks for any insight - I'm way out of my element on body work.

Re: Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
We do have a paint section on here! If i remember right on the 88-98 style it was the primer that was the culprit so the trucks had to be taken to bare metal.

correct. It was a primer error from the factory and if I remember correctly it was mostly black and silver two toned S-15 pickups. My sister had one back in the day that got fixed due to the primer process. I think it wasn't baked long enough or something but she got her whole truck repainted by GM.

Re: Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
I would just sand it and cover with a high quality primer. I do not believe there is any need to strip the entire truck to bare metal. That would be a huge undertaking on a crew cab long bed!
![]() When I was getting ready to paint mine the single stage paints seemed like a good idea because they are easier to touch up and I was planning to do the work myself. However, I ended up having it painted and the painter talked me out of single stage. He said the clear coat protects the paint from the sun and the paint job would last longer. So I ended up using base coat / clear coat. If you do a search their are quiet a few threads on single stage vs. dual stage paints on here. |

Re: Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
Your going to want to feather the paint out where it's chipping until it stops. You can use 180g to feather it out and throw some primer on it, as far as the surface rust you want to sand the rust out and throw some self etching primer. It will prevent it from rusting. Depending on what you want to do with the truck and you said it was just a driver, I would just use a single stage paint. No need for a base coat clear coat

Be careful of the primer you use. A cheap primer may hold water, causing the rust to spread.

Re: Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
Thanks everybody for the input. I completely missed the body section of the forum. I am sure hoping to not have to strip the entire truck... That thing is big! Any ideas for temp maintenance on the rusty roof? sand and POR15 and prime? Or is there a better encapsulator for sheet metal?

Re: Couple of questions for the paint and body guys
If you want it to stay this time, strip the whole truck. What hasn't turned loose probably will. So why waste the money to paint it again the same way expect different results?
