What heads will go on a 327.

Will 350 heads go on a 327 engine? My heads on my 327 have no threaded holes in the front of the heads. My son was told that his engine is a 327, but his heads have threaded holes in them.

Re: Head swap ?

Totally correct!!
They'll bolt right on!
BUT!!!
You could loose some compression if the 350 head's are 76cc and the 327 used 62-64 cc heads.

Re: What heads will go on a 327.

Any small block head will bolt on to a 327.....which is a small block. What you have to be careful of is not to put a large chamber 350 or 400 head onto that 327 if it has flat top pistons. That will drop your compression too much and that 327 will not have much power. You need to stay with heads that have a 64cc combustion chamber. If the engine has domed pistons, you can get away with a larger chambered head. The '68 and '69 327's did come with heads that had the accessory holes in them.

58cc 305 head wold bolt on and raise compression slightly. The vortec 305 heads should be a nice little improvement over the stockers in a original or mild build motor.

Ok, look for either of these heads: '041' or '186' castings
They are original GM heads and will immediately bolt up to your 327 like they grew there.
They have 64cc chambers (nice) and they have the front mount accessory hole/taps so you can mount up a variety of alternator/ac bracket versions.
They will accept pretty much all manifolds (intake/exhaust) that the sbc engines run. They came stock with 1.94 intakes if I recall correctly, which is great for a nice torque truck application....avoid the 2.02's unless you intend on really winding out to get power.
Althought they are not always easy to find but they are out there and came stock on the late 60's, 1970 350's and maybe the last (year) of the 327's.
You will probably hear a lot of recommendations of just buying up a set of aluminum heads which will (possibly?) perform better.
What is your budget to do this full out swap/upgrade?
This is important because if you rebuild a set of heads....it aint' always cheap vs. just buying a set ready to run.
My two bits.

Re: What heads will go on a 327.

It might be a good idea to run a compression check real quick before going down this road to far. Nothing good will come of replacing heads on a worn bottom end. Just one more food for thought. I for one see no reason to to do a refresh rebuild if it is within budget. Rings and bearing are cheap compared to boring a motor and buying pistons. Also a great time to slide a little larger cam in there to match the gears. People used to do it all the time.
