Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

Below are two shots of my 1970 filler neck. The installed one is the original which I did my best to restore. The second is a photo comparing it to the "NOS" one I bought off eBay.

As you can see, they're significantly different, and the "NOS" one would have left a fair bit of the ugly neck exposed.

Note the package has bar code, which I doubt GM used in 67-72. So I think this is a case not unlike the door handle debacle. Probably GM had some offshore manufacturer crank out a bunch of service parts for these trucks in the mid 70s or early 80s, and they're just not the same as the originals.

So they're all technical NOS, just remember the O doesn't mean "made when your truck was" or "same as what your truck came with".

Then that would be Genuine GM... Not NOS.

Well, it's both. Genuine GM and sitting on a GM shelf makes it NOS. You and I and most people would assume NOS means manufactured at the time of the vehicle production, but that's not explicit. And old factory part that's still new, no matter when it was made, could be called "NOS" without deceit - but I'd prefer disclosure that it's an 80s part different from the original run.

I thought about setting up a website where people could list their NOS parts and make it easier to search than eBay, but eBay is so dominant I doubt it'd pan out. As I was planning it though I registered the domain name NOSExchange.com

Sadly, that's the same spelling as "No Sex Change".

Those look like two different seals...one is for 67-70 filler neck, the other is for 71-72

Re: Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

The grommet on the right is exactly like the one that I removed from my 69. I am 100% sure it was the original. So, if that is the "NOS" one, it is correct for your 70 also. I replaced the original with the part number on the package pictured. Almost exactly 1" of the filler next is left exposed.

The first known commercial use of Universal Product Codes (bar codes) was Wrigley chewing gum in 1974. The barcode did not come into common usage until 1981 when NCR deployed the barcode readers mated to their cash registers for supermarkets in 1981.

Since the term NOS means New Old Stock it is ridiculous to believe that a part containing a bar code can actually be New Old Stock for a vehicle built in 1970. It could, however be a replacement, genuine GM part, manufactured between 1981 1nd now by any one of GM's offshore suppliers under contract to GM.

Wherever or whenever it's made and whether it's NOS, is somewhat irrelevant. It is a GM part and is correct for the trucks through the 1970 model year.

Re: Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

I still have some of the "NOS" grommets you show that I bought from Chevrolet years ago.

I never used them because they didn't look like my 72.

Does anybody remember when GM did a run of Chevy "Tailgate Appliques" with painted plastic letters? I still have one of those too.

This...

I make the differentiation between parts made between 67-72 for these specific years of truck. I think it matters - when and where. Similarly if a 1959 apache napco nos part had a bar code one would think something is fishy. It's safe to assume that bar code parts were not made in the USA. Maybe mexico, maybe not. Maybe inferior, maybe not. Does anybody have a picture of a bar code tail light part made by guide for GM and the plastic package unopened? Does it say "guide 67"? just curious

Of course I use repoop stuff because its a truck and I'm not repainting the Monalisa FWIW

Curious why you say that? Are you saying no GM parts that have barcoded boxes are made in USA?

Re: Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

The last one I bought for my 72 seemed to rot pretty quick. Are the NOS ones better in that regard?

Re: Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

The Chevy dealer sold me one of those wrong fuel tank grommets for my '68, back in the '80s. Swore up and down it was the right style. Didn't need to use it until about 9 years ago. Then it tore an edge. Still on there because I'm too lazy to pull out my seat-back tank to get at it.

Re: Filler Neck - Beware "NOS"

You don't need to pull your tank to install or remove the filler neck grommet.
