Glove Box

One modification that just popped up is now that I have installed my Vintage Air system, almost all of the glove box space is gone except for 4 inches. My first thought is to simply lock the glove box and not worry about it. But I would like to be able to use the 4 inches of space. Anyone else run into this problem? If so what did you do?

Re: Glove Box

I am also very curious about this as I am getting ready to put a Vintage Air system in my 51. How about some pics so we can see what you are up against?

Re: Glove Box

My used system came with plastic insert, maybe 3-4" deep. I figure a good place to keep the registration, insurance certificate, bottle opener and a road map. I added storage under the seat and will have more behind the seat too.

Re: Glove Box

Here you are Half Baked. This photo does not show depth perception, but the hoses as well as the unit are about 4 inches from the dash. You can clearly see that the glove box will not fit.

Re: Glove Box

I am using a VA unit in my '51 also - I didn't like the recommended placement/fit at all - I moved it more to the center of the cab and lowered it 3"- now the floor heating will flow to both sides instead of just the center/pass side. I now have more room for the vent/air piping and Everything else, including a complete stock glove box.

Re: Glove Box

I built a console so this placement would not be an option. It is installed the only place it could be installed.

if the console blocks the floor vent to the drivers side be sure to duct thru the console
the roundy thing is my duct to the va floor vent

and the square hole is the outlet. should have put it higher as my toes get frosty

Neat idea if you mount the VA system in the middle.

Re: Glove Box

I had the same challenge after installing my vintage air set up. I simply used a a stock glove box liner and I cut 3-4" off the depth of the liner and used was left to recreate a new back wall of the shortened liner.

It sounds more confusing than it was to accomplish. I will take some pics of mine tomorrow. In the meantime I also installed a cigarette jack in the glove box as well.

I have the newer GenIV Vintage Air unit in my '57. The plastic glove box is less than 2" deep.

Re: Glove Box

Back at my desk, here is a photo of the VA insert. The PO cut it vertically to make it easier to get in. It fits to the inside really good one its in there and used the stock screw mounting points. I have not installed the door yet, but VA says you have to shorten the curved flat pieces that hold the door in place when open, do not know if I will like that may need to figure out a work around.

I actually have not powered mine up, but will tell you once I have. The ones I have seen in operation worked great. The people I know who have them are well pleased, so I will probably be as well.

Re: Glove Box

Same problem here, so I made a custom glove box out of sheet metal and also made my own custom vent plenums.

Re: Glove Box

Roger55,

What did you use to make this glove box insert. What type plastic.

Re: Glove Box

I made the glove box out of 18g sheet metal. Shape the back to the outside dimension of the glove box hole then took a long piece of 18g 4" wide and form it around the back piece and tac weld it as I wrap it around. I also form the top part to miss the latch. Was not to hard to make.

I didn't make it. I was included in my Vintage Air GenIV A/C kit. I did put the rivet nuts in it though. The directions said just to use the OEM screws but that didn't seem good to me so I put the 10-24 rivet nuts in the box and will secure it with the stainless button-head cap screws that you see in my photo.

And, my wife is going to line the inside with some of the same tan vinyl on the seat. She's going to put some pockets on it too so it will hold a wallet, phone, iPod or whatever.

Apparently they do not make this item for the system used in my truck.

Re: Glove Box

I have a V A in both of my AD trucks and this time of year it takes a long time to cool the 140* inside temp inside the black truck down to at best 40* at the vent.

By the time the the high speed fan air is 12 inches from the vent is is not very cool!

Most of my city driving is 20 to 30 mins and the truck is not cooling off very fast, so is it the black exterior or all the glass of the 5 window?

The floo,r firewall, doors and roof are double insulated and carpet on the floor and behind the seat (3 layers). When it is over 105* ambient it is just hard to cool.

My newer trucks (78 & 03) seem to cool much better with factory setups stronger blower, fans than the V Air fans.

Your unit should cool the cab of a truck easily.

I suggest you take it to someone who is really experienced. With R134a, it's really important to have just the right amount of refrigerant in the system. Not quite enough or even a little too much can hurt the performance a lot. The right amount of oil is critical also. A little low on oil and the compressor can run quite a bit hotter. You need to measure the temperatures of the compressor itself, the top of the condenser and the bottom of the condenser as well as the pressures to make an assessment of the cooling efficiency. Moisture in the system and not enough air though the condenser will be big problems too. Everything needs to be assessed.

And btw, the vents in my '57 pickup blow very hard with the VA unit I have.

I know a guy in Sierra Vista really well that is fantastic with this stuff and is very reasonable. He's had professional training on auto a/c up the wazoo. Don't know how far that is from you though.

agreed. drove a week in 100*+ temps and had to turn off the floor vents to keep my toes from freezing.
also had to wire tie the dash vent flex to the eyeball vents to keep them from blowing off

Re: Glove Box

One with a box and one without, I do like the idea of cutting up a card board insert to fit .
I will have to do that to the 53
