Interior door and window handle removel

I have tried the search area and have had no luck. I need to take off the interior handles on a 67 C20. It is probably easy as 1,2,3 but I don't want to pry on them and bugger something up. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

You need to purchase a removal tool. $5-$10. It slides behind the handle and pushes off the clip.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

Thanks Lanman 1972, I take it you can get a tool at your local parts store? ie: orileys, auto zone napa etc. Or do I need a GM dealer?

You can buy the tool at Autozone, o reillys, etc. It's a cir-clip so it's open on one side and fits in a groove on the shaft. The tool pushes the open end of the cir-clip out of the groove. You can buy the cir clips at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

This is what you need. Should be able to pick up at about any parts store.

You can also slide a rag behind it, it will grab the end of the clip and pull it off. Theres a vid on you tube.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

I just used a small screw driver to pry the opening and tiny needle pliers. Keep in mind that the handles may have been taken off a few times before. Mine had a clip on upsdie down and stuck. I had to break the clip off to get the handle off. Buy half a dozen clips and put them away. If you do break one, you can make your own by buying a door spring the same diameter that has the same size loop, then bend and snip to match one of the original clips.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

And if the last guy putting the clip in had any decency, the open end of the clip will be toward the handle. I've found a few the other way, always frustrating.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

Thanks Folks for all the kind helpful advise. While looking up the youtube, I found a way to use a bread wrapper tie also. Many self taught engineers out there. Thanks again.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

On my many tear downs from model years early 60's til late 00's the open end of the clip is always WITH the handle from the factory. Meaning if it is any other way your not in unopened territory. Jim

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

So, I get the handle off that wasn't working in the first place. It musta been a replacement cause it says China4077003 on the back of it. The reason it does not work is that the inner socket of the handle is bigger than the spline. So there is so much slop that the handle just spins around the spline. Probably not much I can do but get a new handle. Any other "Engineer on the Fly" tricks would be helpful. FYI none of the inner socket or spline gears are stripped.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

Sure wish I'd known that trick with the rag. I was junking a while back and didn't have my tool, only a pliers, screwdriver and hammer. Forty-five minutes and a lot of cussing later, I finally got the handle off.

Re: Interior door and window handle removel

The rag method works great, and no chance of scratching anything either. Just work it back and forth like you are shining a shoe
