4 speed swap

I have a 66 c10 1/2 ton long bed truck. It's an og 3 on the tree inline 6. I want to put in a Muncie sm465 4 speed I bought n want to know what size clutch kit do I buy. I also noticed my drive shaft connection is different looks like the one I have in now slides in the tranny n the one u bought takes a yoke. Any easy swap from a different year..

Have you ever driven a granny gear 4 speed? If you converted that thing to the floor you would have the same exact thing without the granny gear (which is useless unless you need to hill start a heavy trailer or lug down a grade, good for 4X4's though). Just type in "chevy 3 on the tree floor conversion" on your search engine the kit should be cheap and take a weekend to put in.

You need the HD 2 piece driveshaft with the slip yoke in the middle if you use the 4 speed. You also really should have the 4 speed removable transmission tunnel/hump, but I have seen someone that managed to wedge one in a low tunnel truck before (IIRC it had a homemade removable cover).

BTW, as previously mentioned, the 4 speed is driven like a 3 speed on the road; you shift 2-3-4. 2nd (used as 1st) is deeper than 1st in the three speed (wider ratios), and the whole thing shifts a lot slower. 2nd is synchronized, though.

So the 4 doesn't sound like the way to go. What do you guys recommend maybe a 5 speed out of a s10 or something. My plan is to have a floor shifter so I can delete the column shifter

Just get a Hurst 3 speed shifter and then you don't have to do any tranny swap. Makes a world of difference on how the truck shifts.

I used this one in my old 70 C10 and loved it. Very precise.

Not sure what brand is in my 64 at the moment (cheapie one), but I will be swapping it out in near future.

I would do what AJ and Palf70 suggests;
Get a floor shifter for the tranny you already have.

Yeah.

The column shift works just fine when it's not worn out IME/IMO, though (I converted my 3 speed truck back to the column). It's also kind of nice when you have three people in the truck.

Well, I always use Granny Gear 1st when I drive them, even empty, lol, but I love it for off-road, pulling a Trailer or carrying a Heavy Load.

But just for every day light duty driving, the 3-Speed will do fine.

The biggest problem with converting to a SM 420 or 465 in my opinion, is the Floor Hump as mentioned above. That has actually stopped me from converting a few.
