auto column question
Guys,
I recently had the column in my '65 C-10 out and replaced the lower bearing and the t/s switch, which included the upper bearing. The lower bearing was completely shot, which was causing a lot of play in the column and the strg. wheel. Fast forward to a week ago. I started to notice and feel a slight popping noise coming from the column when turning the wheel to the right more than a 1/4 turn. I had this problem before I rebuilt the column and thought that replacing the bearings would take care of it. Now, I'm starting to wonder if I don't have something adjusted right in the column. I know that there's an adjuster towards the top of the column, right before the shift bowl, and that there's two adjusters at the bottom of the column. I also noticed that the shifter feels a little loose and maybe not quite as smooth as it should when shifting from P to D or R. I'm thinking that if something's out of adjustment, that could have something to do with this, also. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of something I may be overlooking here? What's kinda strange about this is that when I first put this column back together, everything was working fine. No unusual noises or popping, and the shifter mechanism worked smoothly, also. I removed the steering wheel yesterday to have a look inside the upper end of the column to see if I could see anything. I had a new t/s cancelling cam laying around, so I went ahead and changed it, thinking that maybe it could be a little worn, since it butts up against the upper bearing. So far, everything feels better, but I'm still not sure that I really fixed anything. If the cancelling cam wasn't bad, I'm not sure how taking the steering wheel off, replacing the cam, and reinstalling the wheel could have changed anything.

You mentioned tilt steering....what year and make is your column out of?

Nope, it's not a tilt column. Sorry if I misled anyone. It's the factory non-tilt powerglide column.

Are u sure it's not a bad rag joint, sending the popping thru the steering shaft & into the "bowl" under steering wheel where u ultimately feel and/or hear it?

No, I'm not sure that it's not coming from the rag joint. But, I'll add this: I added power steering to this truck earlier in the year and bought a new rag joint when I did it. I'll check it to make sure that it hasn't came loose, though.

Another thing that I forgot to add to this problem: I've noticed that sometimes when I am braking, especially if I'm on the brake pedal fairly hard, that I'll notice a pop that I can feel in the steering wheel. It did this on my drive to work this morning one time. I'm not sure how these things can be connected, but somehow I'm thinking they are.

First Forgive me for HI Jacking Your Post! Just wanted chime in with a question. Power Glide Column In a Custom Cab 3/4 ton I ran across Has What appears to be an Original Power Steering Set up or Maybe referred to as Power Assist? How RARE is it And should I save it from the scaper ? Has Gear box mounted outside left frame horn Lines going to a CLY attached to front cross rods.

Went up to this place to retrieve the Steering Wheel for a guy. I myself am more familiar with 55/59 GMC's. I had a picture of the truck in an old closed junk yard. Didn't have a wheel puller, so took out the entire steering column. Longest Steering Column I've ever seen!! Short story , when we got it home for him, he didn't want it because it was not like his (the Steering Wheel) Steering wheel Looks like no other I've ran across Pretty fancy, Chrome Horn Ring. Came from a deluxe cab truck. I little about these not even sure of the year yet? Automatic, Power Steering, Power Brakes, A/C. Guess we will have to go get the rest later. Even had a special inner fender.

Judging by the steering wheel and the pewter-colored bezel around the gauge cluster, I'd say that this stuff came out of a '66 year model truck. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've dealt with a popping noise that was felt in the strg wheel, turned out to be frnt lca rear bushing worn out causing the arm to "pop" as it moved while braking hard.

Well, I think I've got the source of my problem figured out. From what I can tell, the upper column bearing is binding up and moving around some inside the t/s switch. This makes the 2nd t/s switch I've put in this truck. The 1st one came from the Truck Shop and this new one is an AC-Delco brand that came from Classic Industries.
With that being said, does anyone have any ideas for keeping that upper bearing still and not moving around and binding? I've had the steering wheel off of this truck several times and haven't seen where I could tell that there are any parts missing inside the column. I did replace the t/s cancelling cam, thinking that maybe part of it's jobs is to apply some pressure to the upper bearing, but it did not help. Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks in advance!
