Universal trans coolers.

Finally got my trans back today from being rebuilt for my 87, took over a month to get back. I was advised to run an external trans cooler, what's the biggest one I can get away with? Would this suffice?

Most are rated by GVW. I installed one large enough to cover half the radiator. Basically from the center hood bracket all the way to the radiator end. I used SS braided hoses and AN fittings.

if i recall you want your trans around 175??so a gauge might be helpfull too. also call the trans shop and see what tthey say is best

I went and got the largest one I could get for my work trucks.. the larger the trailer its towing the bigger the cooler you need

I live in a hot climate area, Texas. The more cooling the better. In the winter, yes, I can tell trans temps takes a few miles to warm the oil. The trans shifts harder in cold weather until oil temps are up. I drive slower in cooler weather so oil has time to heat up. If I remember correctly, mine is rated for 24,000 lbs GVW. Mine is routed inline with the radiator cooler.

Use your Original Radiator cooler as well. Plumb the extra cooler after the radiator in your flow path.

x2^^^hook up your cooler after the factory one. i'm running a 30 000 lb B&M cooler on my crew, & if you want a few more degrees cooler & easier oil changes, pick up a Derale cooling tranny pan. the extra cooling & capacity is nice, but not getting an ATF bath really makes it worthwhile

I installed a Tru-Cool LPD (low pressure drop) cooler after building my 700.
I went with this one:

Fit nicely on one side of the radiator. Used their engine oil cooler version on the other side.

I should note fellas this is mainly gonna be my winter/huntin/spare truck rig, not my daily driver so it won't suffer the kansas heat like my blazer.

Probably not worth mentioning but I will anyway.
Be sure both factory and aftermarket trans coolers fluid flow is bottom to top not top to bottom.
