1948 block ID help?

Hello everyone. I am fairly new to this side of the board but have been stalking around for awhile, spent most of my time in the 67-72 side.
I have recently bought a 1948 3800 thriftmaster and am having a hard time making it run. My question is what engine do I have? I think it is a 216 but the numbers don't make sense to me. AFCA96697 is the block stamp. The AFCA I have found but its the 96697 that doesn't make sense. From what I have found they all start in the 3 thousand.
Getting parts is a little tough if you don't know what you have to start with. Any help or advise would be great. Thanks in advance. [IMG][/IMG]

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...gine.htm#48eng

AFCA AFCM Series 3600, 216ci Truck Engine - w/either 3 or 4 speed transmission

Are you sure yours doesn't read AECM which would be an original 48 3800 motor

Re: 1948 block ID help?

It is a F and not a E, had to go recheck. It also says that the numbers start in the 1's and this starts in the 9's. What's up with this thing?

Re: 1948 block ID help?

yes they start at #1001 that would be the first one built yours is the 96697 unit assembled...
The only time that # will matter when getting parts is if there was a change during the run of a year.. For instance, say there was a change in distributor suppliers, there would be a foot note in the parts catalogs something to the tune of eng #10001-40589 would be set aaaa from 40590-500000 would be set bbbbbb
