Rear shock placement?

I am building a 56 with nova rearend and I have about 6 inches clearance from axle top to frame---I bought gas shocks with about 6.5 inches of travel and can place them anywhere in this axle to frame---so my question---IF I place the shocks using 1/2 the travel will this suffice as the gas shock always will be pushing the frame up.
Ideas? suggestions? thanks Chip
