Spare Parts 64-66 4x4 Build
Ok, I am going to need some advice in the next few weeks.
I am starting a project from my spare parts collection. I have a 64-66 4x4 frame & a 2005 6.0 w/ 5 speed from a 2wd as a base. The current plan is to set the 6.0 & nv 4500 trans in the 64 frame & use the divorced case. I was planning to ditch the stock front end update it with a Dana 44 or perhaps a Dana 60. I have several parts trucks, so I am really not to keen on buying anything big vs. using what I have. Here is my last project. |

Sounds like you have a good build planned. That looks like a fairly decent truck to start with.

The one above was pretty good to start with, the cab floors were rusted due to carpet issues. It is a dedicated puller. I have no plans to do much else to it other than smooth up the fenders some day.

Re: Spare Parts 64-66 4x4 Build
Here is what I am starting with. I am not sure exactly what year this frame is it had a 64-66 Chevy cab & bed on it.
I need to figure out what engine cross member to use with it. I am going to try a 4x4 engine cradle from a newer Chevrolet 4x4 78 - or newer than that. I plan to use the ls conversion mounts to use the older style clamshell mounts. |

Don't know if it matters but that frame is a '60-'62.

Re: Spare Parts 64-66 4x4 Build
Well here is my transplant. I actually have the cab off at this point going to pull the engine & trans tomorrow. Kinda curious at this point to get it hovering above the frame to see how short the first drive shaft will be.

Re: Spare Parts 64-66 4x4 Build
Well the 6.0 is now hovering above the 60-62 frame. At first I thought I might be able to mock up the original 2005 mounts to the older frame, but it seems like it would be more trouble than it would be worth.
I am going to order up some conversion plates for the older clam shell mounts. & next step is to measure a 73-87 frame for a possible donor cross member. The trans mount is going to be simple. I had the stock 2005 Truck exhaust manifolds on, but at this point they look they wont fit at all. I ditched the ac for now & I am going to take off the power steering pump for the engine mock up. |
