Truck Build sheets

I am a new member who has just purchased a 1970 stepside C10 short box. The numbers that I can find on the ownership tell me that the truck was built with a 307 v8. The block VIN is a 1970 307. Are there other numbers to clarify if this engine came in this truck? The GM Heritage centre only has data back to 1977. They told me that GM wasn't as concerned about truck numbers as they were about Camaros, chevelles etc. and build sheets aren't available.

The GM Heritage Center would be correct - for US built vehicles for US consumption.

However, GM of Canada has information for vehicles built in Canada or for Canadian use. They had the detail for my '74 Chevelle built in Oshawa (for US use).

Judging by your location (and the fact that you spelled it as "centre" ) you might give them a shot:

You might also try looking around inside the vehicle for a leftover build sheet. Under the carpet, behind the door trim panels and inside the seat cushion (between the foam and springs) and/or seat back are all fertile ground.

Look for the casting code on the block. There's about a million websites to decode chevy block casting codes, but when you do it should come back as 1970 truck.

Presuming the date codes make sense (the motor was made in the couple of months before the truck, and not after, for example) then that's as close as you can do to document it.

The build sheet will be no more specific. It'll have the casting code indicated, but you can find that elsewhere (websites, books, etc) as to what a 1970 307 with your trans should be.

Mine, for example, on the engine and build sheet, reads:

TO42TTBG which decodes to: 1970 Truck, 402, 310hp L-47, TH400

I live in Bellevue but my mom calls it Belleville. That is until I started calling Regina (where she lives, my hometown) by the name Burgina, then she eventually got it!

Do you still have the option sheet(SPID) attached to the inside of the glove box door? If so, that will tell what motor came in your truck.
In 1970 the 307 was the standard V8. So it will NOT appear on the option sheet(SPID). The 350 and 396BB were options, so they will appear on the option sheet(SPID). Look at the SPID and see if a optional engine is listed, if so, then your truck came with the listed engine.
But if NO optional engine is listed, then your truck came with the standard V8 engine, which in 1970 was the 307.

Keith has put you on the right track - the info from vintage vehicles will be the most complete. A lot of it will be photocopies that you could find elsewhere (at least mine was) but you should get the build date, the dealership it went too, and all the serial numbers so it's great to have. It also lists all the options the truck was built with so you'll have a pretty complete story on your truck.
