Drivers side door question

Does this section of the drivers side door have anything "stock" that belongs here?
It looks to me that somewhere down the road a mirror might have been here and got broken off??
Also how should I go about repairing these areas? There was a poor attempt at brazing and the metal is "cracking" outward from the patched areas.
Should I just cut out the sections and weld in new sheet metal?

Probably a mirror was mounted there. Id find a used door that has a bad bottom and a good top and replace that section. cut out past the brass.

Well after a bit of sanding, found some bondo and I uncovered this... looks like I've got some repairs to do.

Re: Drivers side door question

the 3 holes up front in the triangle pattern are for the stock mirror, you should have a brace and captured nuts inside the door
west coast mirrors were common on these trucks, any truck in the 70s and 80s
the truck with biggest mirror with the most chrome was usually the choice, though the cheapest from kmart was installed
truk had evidence of 3 different mirror mounting brackets similar to what you have

Re: Drivers side door question

The doors in my 71 GMC have so many ripped out holes where mirrors were bolted on and my uncle hit something and knocked them off that I lost count. I think he drilled 54 separate holes in the whole truck to mount different things though.

I'm with Dave on that I think I'd find an other wise damaged or rusted door that had that section in good shape and cut the section out and put in a patch or cut the section out and make a patch. I've battled brass that someone else put in before I got there and it can be a pain.

Re: Drivers side door question

Ogre is correct, I welded up about 10 holes on each door from previous west coast type mirrors, including one ones I drilled for the mirrors in my avatar. The bed had about the same from various hooks and hold downs.

Re: Drivers side door question

Definitely one of those old mirrors. I found some more bondo at the top.
Probably going to get a lower door patch panel and some sheet metal for the mirror mount holes. Gonna keep the stock mirror location.
They had bolts with the heads ground off and bondo over those in the stock mirror location.
Can't we get some kind of legislation in place for the misuse of bond and body filler
