Truck cutting out.

87 TBI 350, ran fine last time I drove it a month or so ago. Idles fine, revs fine, take it down the road and get in it some and it starts to cough spit and sputter, choke out.

I un hooked the egr ect, didn't do anything. A tune up has been on my to do list but I couldn't imagine lack of that would cause this kind of issue. Gas was fresh when I parked it and added some fresh yesterday.

I have not messed with many of these TBI trucks so here I am. Best way to describe it would be like when your running out of gas and what little bit is left is sloshing around.

Throttle body gunked up? Some junk broke loose and clogged the fuel filter maybe? Just thought I'd ask before I start tearing into this thing.

Thanks fellas.

Re: Truck cutting out.

Check your ignition as I am having similar issues and kept trying to adjust the carb. Now I need to replace my hei. Mine is old so it makes sense, but the coil has a internal short.

Re: Truck cutting out.

the pickup coil in the distributor or the HEI Coil will do this... Ive had aftermarket HEIs do this right out of the box

Re: Truck cutting out.

I appreciate the input, always figured the coils took a complete dump not work hit or miss.

Re: Truck cutting out.

Had the same problem, the magnetic pickup inside the distributor is the problem, its rusted or has metal shavings that ground it out. I went to local junk yard and found a clean one for cheap and problem solved. check around the metal ring and the pickups.

Re: Truck cutting out.

You won't find any codes under there.

Re: Truck cutting out.

Why would you have to drive across town? You don't have a paperclip or small piece of wire to check the codes?

Re: Truck cutting out.

you mentioned the truck acts like it is running out of gas. maybe the truck is running out of gas? when was the last time the fuel pump and fuel filter were done. I believe 87 was the first year for electric fuel pump in the tank. do the filter also. the distributors are also a chronic mode of failure for 87. i would be doing the fuel pump and filter first then if you still have issues throw in a new distributor if you have too.

Re: Truck cutting out.

You can watch the injector spray to see if the fuel dies down.

Re: Truck cutting out.

My buddy had a old coil laying around that we knew was good. For the hell of it swapped that out and crossed my fingers. All be damn it worked, runs good again.
