Wiper motor mount rusted out

Hi, I have a 69 c10 w/o AC and my wiper motor fell out from under the dash. Seems like the mount and little hole where it comes through have completely rusted through.

I was wondering if there are any companies that make a patch panel for that part. I've checked with LMC and Brothers and they don't offer a patch panel for that.

Kinda guessing I may have to start calling up junkyards and seeing what they have unless y'all know of any other place to get it. Thanks

Just got my first restore project, '69 C10 SWB and I have the same sort of issue. One of the previous owners had cut the opening of the wiper motor and calked, yes calked, the gaps. Looking to see if you, LockDoc, or any other members have another one?

Check the 1967-1972 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Parts Board on here. A lot of guys are parting trucks. You can't post a want to buy because your not a Premium member (name is not blue) but if you see something for sale you can buy it.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

I have the same issue. My recently purchased truck came with two replacement pieces from donors. Question for the bodywork specialist - what would you estimate the labor charge to replace this portion using my supplied part? I have it out for quote - just want a sanity check on the number. BTW, the other part will be available once the shop decides which part to use.
Thanks,
Mark

Not sure on the charge for labor I think it varies a lot depending on the area.
You can't sell parts on here unless you are a paying member. You can give stuff away free though.

We have another member on here from Mt Airy.

Yeah, I assume the mid Atlantic region is higher than most. I was planning on giving away the extra part once I'm done.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

$500 and up considering the time to cut the old one out and make the replacement fit , moving everything that's in the way under dash welding , sealing, prime and paint ,reinstalling motor and assembly I wouldn't be surprised to see a $1,000 . The hard part will be finding a body shop willing to take it on , most are only panel replacement shops today ,they'll make more $ changing a bumper cover than dealing with your cowl repair .Sad but true !

There is a guy in Knoxville who only does sheet metal repairs no body work no paint work just welding sheet metal repairs and he's backed up for over a year if your on the waiting list WITH a deposit ! @ $100.00 an hour

Thanks. Everything is already removed from under the dash and sitting in boxes for me to figure out . The cowl panel has been removed so access from the outside should be ok. I didn't realize welding would be required from under the dash - definitely more of a challenge. I agree with body shop comment. I just found a local guy here that can do sheet metal repairs but no body / paint work.
I'm still trying to determine how much I'm willing to spend on the truck.

mtairymd, you wouldn't happen to still have one of those replacement pieces would you? I was actually thinking on 3D printing the piece out of plastic so that anyone may use it for their truck/use it as a reference for metal work. It would help out a lot to have an original piece to look at.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

Knoxville? You mean just up river from Brunswick along the tracks by the Potomac before you cross over into Virginia at the foot of South Mountain? Welcome from Mt. Airy...Maryland! I'd say that could be a $500 job, but maybe less. You take it in with all inflammables cleared away and just have them cut, fit, & weld I think you could get a decent price. You don't need a restoration shop, just someone with light metal welding capability. I don't know a lot of locals, so I can't name a local, specifically (I'm way busy), but I bet you go to Jimmy Cone cruise night (1st and 3rd Sat) and start asking and you'll walk away with names and numbers. Try posting something down the page in the Regions Board/Northeast/MD. Might get another member available to help. I don't know how rusty and pitted that whole cowl plenum area is across there, but Key Parts does make that complete panel. To replace that would be seriously involved, but you could get that panel, cut the bottom out of truck & replacement panel, and weld in.

Funny... I used to mow the cemetery up on the hill in Knoxville. I grew up in Neersville, a few miles up 671 from 340. Definitely one of the most beautiful places in the country with the river(s) in my opinion.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

Thought I started documenting this elsewhere on this forum but cannot find it.
I have a 69 GMC 1500 with the wiper mount gone also. Having a good one to look at and measure, it is not a big deal to build your own.
This where I am today May 31, 2017, should be done tomorrow.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

Part 2 of repair, orientating the wiper motor in the cowl.
https://youtu.be/mMq6BMrWGCk
You can see the results of mounting the motor 90 degrees from the correct position. Apparently the wiper arm hit the cowl, so they bashed the cowl down with a rod and big hammer to get it to clear. Probably why the pickup has a new windshield.

Re: Wiper motor mount rusted out

Part 3 video is up: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=mMq6BMrWGCk
Took a wide variety of tools and a lot of cab aerobics, but the area where the wiper motor mounts to the cowl is cleaned and straightened.
Also the motor mount has been orientated to the motor.
The little C-clamp in the picture was very handy for straightening the edges
and manipulating the metal.

The repair is ready for paint, the corners of the cowl were rusted out so they got patched up also. A before painting video is here: https://youtu.be/RxLNZmHwn8I

The hole through the cab is a rough cut to begin with right? Here's what mine looks like on a rust-free cab. They didn't use anything that resembles clean work, but it works.
