2002 yukon squishy brakes

So we have a 2002 GMC Yukon XL and the brakes are just not good. They have almost brand new rotors and pads, but when you press the brakes the brakes don't engage until the brake pedal travels 3/4 of the way to the floor, not until the pedal is pressed almost to the floor do you actually stop.

This is not a new problem have been having it for a few years now.

What would cause the brakes to do this? any recalls for this?

There are no abs lights on, or anything like that.

Thanks for the help
Tate

I would probably replace the master cylinder, also the rear calipers are prone to failure on those. I replaced all my calipers and installed cross drilled slotted rotors on the front with OEM pads and it made a huge difference on my XL.

just had the same issue with my 2000 Yukon. replaced the master cylinder all the pads and rotors and front hubs. my hubs were noisy but they were not loose. replaced everything and now they are like new. that was one thing I hated about that truck. now its great.

Might need to have your ABS pump cycled. A mechanic can do it with their scan tool. IVe read a lot about this on forums. I have an 02 Tahoe and am in the same boat. Havent had it done yet though. Some people force the abs pump on several times by slamming the brakes on to kick the abs in with success.

Have you done a brake job? Did you push the Pistons in without opening the bleeders? It's a good way to give your ABS unit a dirty fluid enema. Then you have a valve stuck open allowing fluid to fill accumulator.

Yeah I do the brakes on them. Are you supposed to open the bleeders when you depress the pistons?

only if you want to prevent damage to the expensive ABS unit

Well I think that would be a good idea haha. I am guessing just open the bleeder screw while I compress the pistons and then close it back up?
