Hauling my big baby home
Hello everyone, I’m new to the site. I just bought a ’48 2 ton Chevy COE, about 8 hours drive from where I live. The 18 foot beavertail trailer I’ll be bringing it home on is not a gooseneck, it’ll be pulled from a receiver/hitch below the bumper of a 2007 Dodge R2500 truck. From the measurements given to me by the seller the truck should fit on the trailer ok, but I’m not sure about it weight-wise. The trailer is good for a 7950 lb payload, and I’m hoping to find some information on what the coe might weigh, since neither the owner or I know. The drive train is still in the truck, and it has a flatbed behind the cab. Wheelbase is 161”, total length is 248”, dual wheels in the back. Anyone know what this would weigh?
Thanks much for any help! Fixer |

Welcome to the forum Fixer.
You had posted this in the wrong section of the forum (Pre-47) but I moved it for ya. I'm sorry I can't help you with your questions, but I'm sure someone who can will see this and reply.

Re: Hauling my big baby home
Thanks for the welcome Lokin and Bill, and the move Bill, my bad. Thanks also, Matt for the encouraging comment, gives me a bit more comfort, but did you mean fine as in "legal", or fine as in "the trailer handled it fine"? On a long trip like this I want to be really legal, especially as it's coming north across the US/Can border. I'm listening, folks.

Re: Hauling my big baby home
The weight should be in the GM info book. I know we have them in the 60-66 section. Perhaps check your stickies...
PICS, and have a great trip! |

Re: Hauling my big baby home
I have a 48 2 ton, the title weight reads at 5370 lbs. Not sure how close that would be to a COE though.

Re: Hauling my big baby home
So I found what I was looking for here:
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...to/48index.htm, on a tip from OrrieG in an old post. The truck weighs less than 5900 pounds, so I'm definitely legal. Thanks for the interest & advice. Fixer |

Re: Hauling my big baby home
I'd like to drop it down to about 8" clearance, likely on a more modern, complete chevy 3/4 ton chassis and drivetrain. A box in back, sun visor up front, new paint. That's about it, pretty easy if you say it fast.

Ha,ha,ha....they do look pretty nice, don't they? I might just keep them. Oh, and that grill is likely to get chromed too.
