Concerning Conversion to Disc Brakes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ive asked this question in another forum...thought I'd post here also.

In time, I want to convert the 70 GMC to disc brakes. I thought I'd stay with the 6-lug package, 2 1/2 drop spindles, ect...this will occur in the future.

My question concerns, If I buy new wheels to fit the drums I have now, will they fit the disc brakes when I convert? If not, I'll look at keeping the stock wheels for now.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions/comments.

If you are buying aftermarket wheels no problem they are all now designed to work with disc brakes. The only thing to watch for is if you buy aluminum rims mount one and measure distance from back of rim to caliper, then add the width of caliper and make sure whoever balances the rim gets this measurement and knows not to place the stick on weights between these measurements as if they do the weight will rub on backside of caliper as wheel rotates.

what 6 lug disks are you using? where did you get them from? I have a 67 and want to keep the 6 lug but have disks?

Snowman....The disc brakes are 'in the future' as of now. Im just trying to get the truck 'driveable' for my son.

billy, i understand wanting to get you truck ready for your son. my son wants to rebuild my truck, he's close to it. he was with me when we wrecked it and it saved us from getting hurt. the truck took the impact by loosing its right suspention and bending the frame. the only thing that happened to us is the small scratch he got from the mirror bolt on his wrist. NO NEW TRUCK COULD TAKE THAT!!
(oh yea thr 23 ft trailer we were pulling was also destroyed, but the 67 mustang on it didn't get a scratch)

what about something like a early 90's chevy IFS rotor and some older monte carlo calipers,

not really sure about the front, but it cold work in the rear

Well im starting to gather parts for my '70. Picked up some used rotors today along with dust shields $70 total but one rotor was to thin so back to the yard tomorrow for exchange. I think im going to order the McGaughy spindles as it will be the simplest way for me to go. Im just wrapping up the rear end which includes new posi/gears, 5 lug axles, heavy duty drum brakes. All to be topped off with new Centerline wheels. Lots of work to do yet.

boraxman, where did you get your 5 lug axles? Are you happy with them? I'm changing over soon too so I'm interested in how that change went. Good luck with the brakes.

Ive been dealing with this guy in Mission Hills w/ 30+ years experince. He got the axles brand new @ $120 each. He charged me $150 labor to completely set up the whole rear end. That was out of the truck. Let me know if you want his name and number, I have his card at home.
