Motor question
Question, my dad took my motor apart since I'm still overseas and he can't just let it sit there. It's a 350 with four bolt mains. He sent the following message and pic.
Hello the crank and mains are in great shape and are cut to 10mm I inspected the cylinders and pistons and block is bored out to 60 I am not sure if can be saved, I will have it inspected and machined if is possible. Any impute on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks |

He probably means the crank and mains have been machined to .010 (ten thousandths), which is fine. As far as the block, .060 is as far as I would go over on the bore. If it's at .060 and the cylinder walls are in good shape, I would go with it (as long as there are no cracks in the block). If it's at .060 and the cylinders need to be bored, I'd say it's time for a new block.

I have seen them go over +.060 but you "can" start having heating issues due to the thinner cylinder walls.
If it is not scratched up real bad, you can just hone it to rough up the cylinder walls.

70' your right, I forgot to ask the question which was is. In the opinion of the more experienced builders here can this block be reliable to build on. He says it appears to be in great shape no scratches in the cylinders and no cracks.

The only way to know on the cracks for absolute certain is mag particle testing. Most folks call it magnaflux. As far as further machining, I would not personally go beyond the .60 that it's already at, as pointed out it can cause overheating issues.

Good advise given, bottom line is...Take it to a machine shop and have it spec'd...
