New Ignition Switch...Starts then stops....
Hello.....I replaced an aftermarket ignition switch in my 57 today with an original replacement....after installing my truck starts then immediately shuts off....I can hear the electric fuel pump fire up when I turn to the "start" position...any thoughts?.....maybe I do not have it connected correctly....
- Picture from the back on the dash - Red wire is power - Purple is the solenoid - Pink is the ignition coil - Orange are the accessories - Painless wiring harness... thank you!.....yes...I look like a crazy man in the picture!... |

Sounds like you don't have power to the "run" position only the "start" position so it starts then shuts off when the key goes back to the run position.

Re: New Ignition Switch...Starts then stops....
Are you running an HEI distributor, if not you are missing a wire. Green goes directly to the coil during starting, the #1 ingition terminal should have a wire that goes to the resistor then from the resistior to the coil to reduce voltage during normal running to keep from burning the points. If you are running an HEI you need to have a 12v ignition on only dedicated wire to the HEI so you get full voltage only when the engine is running.
Here is a diagram I found, you are missing #1 ignition.

Re: New Ignition Switch...Starts then stops....
Unplug the connector at the HEI, get a tester and see if you have 12V with the key in the "run" position. I had issues when I first fired my new motor last week after a complete re-wire. My problem was that I didn't have 12V to the HEI when the engine was cranking, but if I released the key to the "start" position, it would fire.
