67 gmc

New guy here from Ohio. Picked up a 67 K25, but the door tag says 10,000gvw. First off is this a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton? Pretty sure it was in the fire service. PTO on the trans, spot lights on both sides and the rear. And holes in the roof for a light bar originally red, now gold. Someone added the steel flat bed. Hasn't been tagged since 96.

Re: 67 gmc

They didn't make a 1 ton 4x4 till later In the square body trucks. That's a 3/4. I love the k/20s they are my favorite out of all the variations of the 67-72 trucks. Very nice specimen!

Could gently sand down through the gold to see if you can bring a logo through. And I mean gently with say 2000grit wetsanding. Another is just to look for a build sheet, under the dash, under the seat if its an original seat, on or behind the gas tank, it may say where the truck was sold and possibly if the FD bought it new. Good luck and I like the truck. Welcome to the board!

Re: 67 gmc

To see what you have you can post pics of the vin tag or if the spid is still on the inside of the glove box lid. The info will give you a start on what you have ,Can you take a few pics of the front axle?

Gm factory 1-tons 4x4 with Dana 60 didn't start until 1977 but there was Napco that did do conversions.

V-6, 4WD, PTO, very cool. Cab looks like it could use a lot of work.

OK it's tagged 10,000 Gross Vehicle Weight (maybe they are counting trailer weight LOL), allowing 6,000 lbs for empty weight, that leaves 4,000 lbs and that 2 tons. Maybe the truck weighs more? Not sure someone chime in please.

I'm with you, it's either a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton and I'm leaning toward 1 ton. It's hard to count the front leaves but I think it's 4 looking at the axle area.

I'd check to see if the frame numbers match the cab numbers. I'd be surprised if they didn't, I'd tend to want to go with SS Tim on the 7600 real GVW, and if the vin numbers match then he's pretty much for sure right.

I'm not sure, are both 3/4 tons AND a 1 tons labeled 2500 series?

REALLY be cool if you could lift the "fingerprints" (forest service) off the door and re-paint it the same as it was. Even cooler if you could find an archive picture of it and re-make it as original. I'm a dreamer LOL.

As far as I'm aware the only way it could be a 1 ton 4x4 is with the napco power pack kit. There wasn't a factory k30/3500. GM didn't build 1 ton 4x4s until the mid 70s. My guess would be because there wasn't a strong enough front axle. No steering dana 60s this early on. This very reason is why there's no factory big block 4x4 67-72's

The VIN plate breaks down as a 1967 GMC factory 4x4 V6 127" wb 2500 Cab and Chassis built at Pontiac. The max GVW rating is high and is often incorrect on the earlier trucks. 7600 should be considered the max.

Tim, I thought that as well but on second thought wonder if its not correct, look at the 4 leafs on the front axle. Regular K20's in these years had 2 or 3 if I recall correctly.

Re: 67 gmc

wasnt there also a 351 and 401 V6 available?

does it have a dana 60 or HO72 rear, overload springs?

Power brakes and 5.13 gears might just make it a 10K lb rig

If it really was a gov spec vehicle I think GMC would be the place to special order one beast of a truck.

Hope the build sheet shows up.

Being a Chassis Cab and a GMC it was very likely fleet order and may very well have heavier springs than a comprable K20 pickup. That boat anchor V6 weighs as much as a BBC, adding in the manual trans, transfer case and front drive axle makes for a heavy truck.

Without a SPID or a build sheet its hard to say for sure.

Since its VIN coded a 20/2500 its certified up to about 7500lbs.
The 30/3500s range 6600-14000. A lot of earlier Chevy trucks 68 down listed the max gross for the series. So its common to see a C30 pickup with a 10k tag even though the max you could g SRW was 9k. Even then it was tough to spec wheels/tires heavy enough.

Still feel the 10k is a typo on a 2500.

Re: 67 gmc

Yep but only the 305 was available in a 4x4. The 351 could be had in a 2wd light duties but the 401 and 478 were only in big trucks. Love to find a 478 though and swap in a K20!

Re: 67 gmc

Thanks for all the info guys. Here's a better pic of the front springs an d a pic of the rear. Timpco emblem was on the front of the hood. I thought it was a dealership, but doing some looking , they built fire trucks.
If I can't find any thing, I like the idea of sanding slowly down to original paint. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks again Mike

Re: 67 gmc

Driver side cab is worst than the right side. Cab floor seems pretty good, just rockers and cab corners. The poor thing has been sitting behind a guys garage since 96. The odometer is reading 17000. This is my first gmc v6, and it has almost no oil on the motor. I do know all my other older gm/chevy big and small blocks leaked and were covered with oil at 117000 miles. Could this only have 17000 miles? Also the clutch and brake petal look new.

Re: 67 gmc

Found some time to get started on the body. Did some patch panels before, but never a complete floor. It went pretty good, way better than expected. Lifted the cab about 6" and it slid right in. Had to make a couple relief cuts in the front, but they pulled right back out when it was all fitted in place.
