I know that the earlier years of the 700r4 were not the best or at least that is what I have always heard. I need to either rebuild the diesel 700r4 that is in the truck or upgrade to a newer 700. So with that said. With the 6.2 is there really a need to put a newer one in? I am not sure what the newer 700's have that make it better over the older one. Just wondering if it is necessary to do so or if rebuilding the old one will be just fine. Also if a newer one is put in is it just a plug and play like the old one? I was thinking they were all TV cable operated and had a lockup plug on the side? I just want to make sure I have a good trans I can depend on.

Get a newer unit and hope for the best because despite it being a stronger unit, the 6.2 still won't be easy on it. The older 700R4's were very weak behind the 6.2.

So how new can I go for one to hook right up? Don't have any problems rebuilding the one I have but if a newer updated trans if available even if it has to be rebuilt then I would rather go that way.

You want to get a 87 to 93 700r4 with the auxiliary valve body.

You'll also want a lower stall converter for diesel engines. Have the transmission shop open up the converter and braze the fins and fix the lock up mechanism that fails so easily.

Just buy the correct converter for an 87 with the 6.2.
Mine has 200, 000 miles on it, was rebuilt once.

There were many upgrades made through the years on the 700r4. All I know is the one in my '85 diesel Jimmy with 4.10 3/4t axles and 315/75-16s works great. Don't know if it was ever rebuilt, but I've had it since '10. I tow, 4-wheel, and run it out hard. The axles came from a '91 diesel Suburban and the plan was to also swap-in the 4L80E/NP241, but never saw the need once I started driving it.
I don't what your use is with yours, but unless you can grab the best 700r4 for dirt cheap, I'd just rebuilt yours and roll with it.

It's just going to be a daily driver. I have my dually if I need to haul or pull anything.

I would guess that if you bring it to a guy that knows his stuff, he will be able to put beefier parts where they are needed.
