Re: Help smoke from steering column
Since the Hazards are on their own fuse it sounds like you may have fried the fusable link at the battery. Did you find the cause of the smoke? Is the battery still charged?

Re: Help smoke from steering column
That is not the cause, but the result unless it was contacting grounded metal.
Might start with the factory service manual pages 12-33 and 12-34. Easy enough to fix though with another terminal and a pigtail to splice in. But that purple wire only feeds the switch from the fuse block tap. Like I said earlier you might have fried the fusable link. Check it and all your fuses/wiring for damage. * VIN/Model Decoders * Power Team Charts (engine/transmission/gear ratio) * Post Your Pickup SPID Blazer SPID Suburban/Panel SPID * RTFM ... Re: Help smoke from steering column
Where is the fusible link you say I could have fried I checked all fuses for continuity theses where the fuses that blew.
Traffic Haz 15 amp Tail stop park dome 20 amp Glove box spot lamps 15 amp I do have the service manaul and I am reviewing 12-33 and 12-34 Not too good with wiring diagrams I get how to flow the spaghetti to next item, but that is really it. |

Re: Help smoke from steering column
Just to note wipers won't work either just my headlight switch seems to work.
Also repaired the purple line for now by just jumping the turn signal harness pigtail. |

Re: Help smoke from steering column
The fusible link is some times up by the firewall on the driver side and i think there is one in the wire going to the starter .Looks like you may have had a dead short in the column .I would start by testing the wring for opens and dead shorts with a fluke meter. The harness isnt to bad to replace in the column just have to pull the whole thing out .

Re: Help smoke from steering column
The link should be between the battery + and the junction block on the passenger fender. They are often gone.
Do you have working headlights or horn? If yes, its not a fusible link issue. |

Re: Help smoke from steering column
These two diagrams will show how the hazards and other stuff you have that is not working and they should explain why they quit working. Mr. Franken is correct, if your lights and horn are working then the fusible link is good.
This diagram shows the accessory wire from the key switch which powers the hazard lights fuse and the wipers and heater fan switch. It is the 3rd one down from the top and is a 12 gauge wire. It is shown by the arrow. This is the back side of the fuse panel and the arrows show the accessory wire coming in to power the fuses for the things that no longer work. It also connects to the key switch battery wire and I suspect that the short from the column connector has blown the key switch connection to the brown accessory wire. especially if all the fuses are good.

Re: Help smoke from steering column
The smoke needs to be kept inside for things to work properly. Once you let it out you need to replace the wiring with new wires and connectors that still hold the smoke in for stuff to work.

Re: Help smoke from steering column
If you let the smoke out of the column, generally bad news. Just my 2 cents.
