Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

I just replaced both trunnions on my tailgate and the gap is way off. it rubs bad on the right side. The right side tailgate also allows me to lift it up and down 1/2" to 1/2"....by this I mean play in the trunnion area. Any ideas on how to fix this or why the gaps are so different?

Re: Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

look inside where the "trunnions" sits (INSIDE THE TAILGATE) look for rust or anything that cause it to "bind" you may have to "MODIFY" your trunnions with a hammer...good luck....

Switch trunnions sides and see if that makes a difference.

Also, to align things correctly you may have to loosen all bolts on your bedsides and front panel to re-leave the bedsides. I used tie down straps cross-cornered to pull/move the bed side to align the gaps on that tailgate. Once I got the gaps good, I tightened everything up and removed the straps.

Bingo I think this is what is needed! Didn't even cross my mind but previous owner had bed off when restoring. Thanks for the responses

Something is seriously wrong with the hinge on the left. You should not be able to see that much of it.

Re: Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

The right one looks like it is sitting in a recess like it should. The left one looks like it is sitting out flush with the edge of the end cap. Take a look at both sides of the bed and they should look the same where the trunnions bolt in. Look to me like a repair was done on the left side and now the trunnion is not where it should be.

Re: Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

Ok I will look at that today...it does seem really exposed on the left side!

Re: Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

Look like some has done some work to the bed. It's not suposed to be exposed like that, there is a small lip that covers the hinge. Check and see if you have the lip still in place. That left rear back tail light piece could have been replaced and not correctly replaced, or the bed is badly tweaked.

Re: Tailgate issues with new trunnions installed

The trunnions should be mounted inside that side channel (just like your passenger side trunnion) and not be exposed like your driver side one. I also spent a lot of time hand fitting the tailgate joint with a die grinder and drum sander so that they fit and rotate smoothly around the trunnions (my aftermarket tailgate needed a lot of work).
