In my 69 4x4......The powersteering squeels and is interminent while driving. I have replaced the pump, streering box and the hoses. When the engine is cold the fluid is at the correct level. After the engine runs for a minute or more and is stut off, there is a hissing sound comming from the cap of the pump and it also overflows. I have bled the air out at the streering box and have raised the wheels off the ground and rotated the wheels lock to lock. Any Ideas???????

I wonder if the pump is overheating from too much of a load.
Try jacking up the front end (don't forget the jack stands) and with the engine shut off, grasp a tire and try to turn it by hand. It should turn with a little effort, but you shouldn't need to grunt or cuss. If it takes more effort than you think it should, I would look into teh ball joints. Try pumping them full of grease and working them back and forth (while still in the air) and check for stuff that may be rubbing where it shouldn't be.

I did have the front of the truck up on stands and tried it...it moves free. Also removed the high pressure line from the steering box and cranked it over.......wow there is lots of pressure coming out of that hose. Also removed the return line from the pump, and I am getting fluid out of that with the engine running. The liquid was quite foamie. As far as the ball joints go...there all new and full of grease.

you need to spend more time bleeding the air out of the system. The foam is the air bubbles that are causing the problem. Until they are gone you will still have this problem.

It has taken me 2 tries to get the system burbed on another truck. I gave up after 30 minutes of turning the wheel slowly. The next morning I tried it again and the rest of the air came out. Remember to turn it slowly. Go to fast and you just pump the air bubbles around and round. They need time to escape when they get back to the pump resevoir.

Same problem with mine. It took like three tries after I had aerated the oil....LOL! I let it sit for a few days and then tried again and it finally got all the air out and I quit having to add fluid.

I'll put it back up on stands later today...and let it sit a few days and then try it.....moving the wheel slowly. Thanks for the advice.
