72 Shoulder Belt Mounting Bolts

Does anyone have a source for 7/16 20 bolts to mount the optional shoulder belts I bought recently? The bolts included in the NOS package are 1/2 13, which are fine for the floor attaching but not for the shoulder of a 72 truck. I'm guessing that they switched to 1/2 13 in 1973. The holes are there, with caps, but are definitely 7/16 20. I am going to try NAPA and a True Value who specializes in agriculture, but I need the high shoulder for the belt to ride on.

Re: 72 Shoulder Belt Mounting Bolts

Getting the 7/16 20 bolts is easy. getting ones designed to attach seat belts is the problem.

The belt needs to be attached and the bolt tightened against the unthreaded shoulder, so the belt will ride on the unthreaded shoulder and not be pinched and not able to move.

The picture shows the 1/2 13 bolt that is too big, a 7/16 20 with an unthreaded shoulder, but it is too long (on the shoulder part and will stick out too much. The shorter one has no shoulder. I might be able to use the shorter one by cutting a sleeve wide enough to let the belt hang freely.

Buying the wrong parts is easy. You don't even have to go to an autoparts store. Your local home depot is perfect for getting some of the wrong stuff and hacking something really dangerous together. Following your advice will lead to someone getting their neck broken when that bolt fails in a crash.

The correct grade 8 shoulder bolt is available from Juliano's Hot Rod Parts.

Re: 72 Shoulder Belt Mounting Bolts

I would love to find one like the one you picture FITZ, but so far, 3 different stores (NAPA, Agricultural True Value and Home Depot) and I get them only like I pictured. Okay length and no shoulder, or too long with too large a shoulder. Without a shoulder, the bolt has to tighten all the way down and pinch the belt, which needs to swing on the mounting bolt, or too long a shoulder and it will stick out way too far from the cab. I will try some other places in hopes I can find a 7/16 20 with a short shoulder.

Thanks guys. I went to ACE Hardware this morning and bought 2 grade 5 bolts that will work. Any issues and I'll contact the Seatbelt Store.

Re: 72 Shoulder Belt Mounting Bolts

Pair on the left are the correct 7/16-20 bolts for factory shoulder belts. Bolt on the right is a 7/16-20 from a 67 lap belt. 67 trucks used a 7/16-20 bolt on the floor, and they can be used to mount shoulder belts as all 67-72 trucks have that thread in the pillar mounts. 68-72 floor mounts use a 1/2-13 bolt. You can use any 7/16-20 bolt to mount shoulder harnesses, as it is hidden by the boot and not seen

Re: 72 Shoulder Belt Mounting Bolts

Thanks leddzepp. I was surprised when I discovered the shoulder belt install required 7/16 20 instead of 1/2 13, but I was able to adapt other bolts to mount the shoulders. I would guess the correct bolts pictured are not too common.
