Something (frame/rack/blocks) to set a truck bed onto?

I need to build or find something to set a short bed onto, so the body man can get things right while I do some things to the frame. I figure it needs to be as tall as the frame of the truck, or approximately.

I've actually built one out of wood years ago, but that was outdoors using 4x4 posts, so it was easy. It can't be outdoors this time.

Any ideas?

I found this online. Looks like it would work, though the blocks for casters aren't right in my mind. 2x4s or 2x6s along the width at the bottom seems better. It doesn't have to be near this tall either.

I did something like this, except the 4x4 posts align with the pickup box bolt holes. I just lagged through the four corner-most holes into the end of the 4x4.

I also sat it on the car skates to roll it around.

Great idea Keith. I was thinking about the configuration allowing for bed bolts as well. Only thing I might do different is 2 or 4 2x4s along the top.

Where do you get those roll plates (casters)?

What did you use to mount the 4x4s to the 2x4s?

2x4's to 4x4's: just some deck screws I had laying around

Those are car skates for scooting vehicles around in close quarters. I probably got them through the Eastwood Catalog or Summit Racing or someplace like that.

One other funny story: the bottom didn't originally have that 2x4 laying flat crosscar. When I went to winch the thing up onto the trailer I realize it was narrower than the skids on the trailer. I had to quickly add those two pieces at the bottom so that it could slide right up on there without falling through the middle.

Ah...I thought you added them to add balance, which seemed like a great idea. I looked online for car skates. I assume yours have a flat surface so the 2x4s (or 4x4s) sit nice and flat. The surface on most car skates are rounded or V-shaped and may not work well.

Great set up Mr. Chevy, but beings I don't weld and such, I probably need to stick with wood.

I made a set of long sawhorses that work well for me. I also made a set of sawhorses several yesrs ago to set my coupe body on, it now has my C10 cab on it. If you need to move them around they probably won't work.

I got so excited about this post because of mine but while skimming I saw you don't weld but bolt on would do to, i took a ladder rack off one of the trucks I bought wrecked[you know with the pipes up over the cab]and this one was a factory done job made for many trucks were it could expand or contract it had sliding pipes inside some of the others. I cut off the forward part the part over the cab, ran it in as far as it go flipped it over and added rollers and I have been using it in the body shop for many year of heavy use.I have also taken a long bed truck frame and cut it behind the cab and put some pipes on it with casters[I built it first] and have been using it about ten years it is great to hold beds and what not on. I probably don't have $30 bucks in both of them. Jim
