manual trans with overdrive?
Are there any (reliable) manual trans for our trucks with an overdrive? I see the gearvendors overdrive for the sm465 but I wouldnt want to spend that much If I really only need it a couple times a year. I do about 500 miles both ways of highway 2 times a year to my cottage and am pulling a boat. I want a 67-72 but this might be a turn off. I still need a truck so I'm just voicing my questions.

Depending on how heavy the boat is a NV 3500 might do or the NV 4500 is very popular and it has a removable bellhousing and the T-5 would also be an option as well it your not gonna throw a lot of power at it. Jim

Check out advanced adaptors. They have a gear splitter giving you 1:1 and overdrive in all gears. Not too expensive either. "ranger gear splitter"

Re: manual trans with overdrive?
I don't know the exact weight, it is a 21' mastercraft prostar 190, full fiberglass, I want to say around 3k plus I fill it with food and gear. So I would say a total weight for 4 thousandish. My trailer isn't tongue heavy so not really a problem there. I am looking at the ranger gear splitter right now, it looks promising. engine wise I was thinking mild 350, not looking to win a race, but it needs to be 4x4 compatible.
thanks for the help guys, keep them coming! |

Re: manual trans with overdrive?
If you want to use your SBC, SM 465 and current t-case, you could not go wrong with the Torque Ranger. Yes, you will have to move the cross member and lengthen/shorten drive shafts.

I'm liking the sound of that more and more. I can do the cross member, but how much would it cost to shorten the driveshaft(ballpark)? I don't think I could do that myself.

Re: manual trans with overdrive?
Is your truck 2 or 4 wheel drive? Small block or big block? Tire? Gear? SM465 or 3 speed?
May be another way to get there depending on what setup you have.

Re: manual trans with overdrive?
I don't have a truck yet, but when I do it will only have a mild 350, 4x4, 31 or 33" tires, 410 with a locker, and an sm465.
