VIN/Engine code help

So, I bought an 86 SWB and have decoded the VIN to know that it came from the factory with a 4.3L V6...

But, I have a V8 in the truck. The owner "had no idea" it didn't have the stock motor in it. (He was selling it for a friends niece).

Anyway, the stamp on the block says 10424UFS which decoded tells me: "1980 350 4 bolt main".

But, the VIN overlay stamp says C8A366203... I can't decode this one.

So, my question is this: Do I need to decode the vehicle VIN on the block, or am I just trying to do more research than I need to do?

Thanks for any help! Also, if you do find any info, could you post the link so I can find it too? Not that I won't believe you, I just have this funny need to verify everything with this truck now... (Thanks to friends and their nieces)

Re: VIN/Engine code help

Look here to narrow it down as to your motor casting and date codes.

And info here to explain the vin stamp.

Re: VIN/Engine code help

Here is some nice generic info on the '86 Chevy pickup:

https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...olet-Truck.pdf

and, depending on how serious you are about researching your truck, you can send the VIN plus $50 here and they will send you the factory invoice for your specific truck (including option content, pricing and build dates).

That is really cool Keith, I might just get one of those invoices for my 84'. The glove box sticker was gone when I got mine. By any chance do you know what the dark blue factory color was called in 84'?

I'd have to say Midnight Blue (code 29).

Re: VIN/Engine code help

It sucks that Chevy's records only go back to '77.

Chevy records do go back further for any vehicle either built in Canada or built in the US for Canadian consumption; available through GM of Canada Vintage Vehicle Services.

Bummer.

I was able to play that card once as my '74 Chevelle was built in Oshawa (for my consumption).
