When did C30's get cats?

I have to sell my K20 down the road because I need something family friendly. So I am working on picking up a crew cab dually. Since I can not stomach buying a new truck I will build my version with out things that annoy me.

When did cats become a requirement on a California truck. I saw a ad where it was mentioned 1984 last year of no cats.

I am looking at earlier the 80 to keep smog issues down, or get a TBI version then go for LS swap.

There is a kid at work who wants it bad since the running gear is new, and I can not pass up his offer. So I want to act quickly.

My '87 is single exhaust with a cat and unleaded gas, and my 86 is a dual exhaust no cat and regular gas. Both are K/30's with 454's

Re: When did C30's get cats?

Federal: cats went on the C10s in 1975 (under 6001# GVW).

State: cats went on all pickups in California in 1978.

Federal: cats went on all trucks under 8501# GVW in 1979. This was all C/K/10/20/30.

There are a few exceptions to the first one. not all 75 up C/10s had cats.
Calif. also required cats on `1975 up, under 8500 GVWs, also with a few exceptions.

I know I own one of those exceptions: 75 to 77 454 equipped C/10s did not have cats whether they were Calif or federal. 1978 was the first year for cats on California 454 C/10s. 1978 Federal 454 C/10's did not have them.

Don't know when CA went to all cats. My fed '86 was no cats, leaded gas legal.

'85 C-20 Crew with no factory cat. I can't remember when leaded gas was removed from the pumps. My '87 C-30 has one.

Re: When did C30's get cats?

I just read the 76-80 big 10 raised their GVW not to have cats on 1/2 ton trucks.

Re: When did C30's get cats?

I have found the truck I want. It is a fully loaded 1984 diesel titled truck. Someone converted it to a SBC, and the guy thinks it is a 305.

Either way it is a good base for a clean up, and a slow build as money + time converge.
