New manual steering box feels tight

Just installed a new steering box on my 67. It's not hooked up to the steering wheel yet but when you turn it by hand it feels tighter than the old one. It even sounds a little gritty. Is it tighter because the older one is probably worn out? The only reason I replaced it is because I'm doing a frame off and I'm replacing everything while I have it apart

I take it this is a manual str. gear. If it binds up when it goes across center, it is adjusted too tight. Does it have grease in it.

It's new and it comes greased. Not sure about the adjustment. Are they supposed to come adjusted?

The unit should of came with lub and the clearance adjusted. Usually the factory paints the adjustment screw. If the paint is broken it's been tampered with. It should feel more snug then your worn out unit especially turning it by hand and passing over center. When you hook it all up I bet it will be just fine turning it with the steering wheel.
