With a little skill, money, cutting torch/plasma, welder, and grinder anything will work.

A hemi in a yugo will work...anything is possible with the appropriate amount of planning, commitment and craftmanship.

Re: Caddy 500 in a 89 blazer with a gmc kodiak 5 speed transmission?

A SOHC 429 backed with a caterpillar hydrostat will fit. You can hook something up to everything and use it to power anything. You're limited only by time and money.

Is a 500 Cadillac and ZF 5 speed doable? Absolutely. Practical? Not in the least. Its not even on the "neat because its different" spectrum. Its on the "omg that was a lot of work for next to no purpose" spectrum. High on it. I think you ought to scrap the Cadilac boat anchor + oddball transmission ideas and go with something a little more mainstream. there's a reason you don't see many 500 Cadillacs. No need to learn first hand why.

You can do a 502 big block and a 4L80e for pennies on the dollar to what you'd spend on this weird Cadillac stuff and have 100x more realistic chances of success and happiness.

I would go for it, but go with an auto tranny, different is better instead of mainstream, still a lot of parts available for the caddy

Re: Caddy 500 in a 89 blazer with a gmc kodiak 5 speed transmission?

The caddy big blocks work good if you are on a budget, use a modified TH400 with the Pontiac/Olds/Buick bell-housing and custom make very bracket and mount you need. If 4wd, the tranny needs a 4wd rear housing and tailshaft, which means a full dissection/rebuild.

No idea if the 5 speed would work or if you can find a flywheel for that caddy motor.

But...
I'm slowly learning the value of actually having the vehicle running and driving. As I get older, I'd rather be driving that blazer to the beach than crawling around trying to get a square block to fit in a round hole...

Re: Caddy 500 in a 89 blazer with a gmc kodiak 5 speed transmission?

Caddy 500's are getting hard to find but NOT a turd BB that's for sure. 1970 was the highest rated year where they were rated at 375HP/500lbs. in stock configuration a comp. ratio was 10.25:1 for 1970 only. Yes, to build one isn't cheap beyond stock-therss a few companies dedicated to stroker kits for them-nobody makes any kind of performance head that I'm aware of-Edelbrock makes intakes for them....porting the stock heads and going with a stroker setup is the best you'll do with them-long rods and a heavy crank build a lot of torque but to go upstairs with them at all you really need modifications to the oiling system.
