Project "Haulin' "

Ok guys... I have my 67 Chevy "Raymond" that we are building for more of a show truck but that leaves me without a truck to haul parts and to just drive...

I introduce "Haulin' " to you... this is going to be far from a show truck but we are going to clean it up and do some necessary things to it... This is a 1971 Short wide CST with a 350 V-8 with a automatic... I know you are seeing a 1970 but it is a 71 with a 70 grill... I thought about switching it back to a 71 grill but the more I look at it the more I like the 70...

It is setup for factory air but it will take alot of work to get it hooked up so we will see if I ever do that... I have everything from my 67 except a compressor so maybe after both trucks are done I will look into doing that...

I bought this about 2 weeks ago... it needs alot of work but the money was right on it... I am taking it to the body shop 5/26/15 to have the rusty roof cut off and another roof installed... I will get it back Friday 5/29/15... Once we get it back we will do the final body work on the roof and do the paint work to complete that...

I have already bought the patch panels for the bedsides along with another set of doors and will probably work the doors this weekend so I can paint them at the same time...

I will post updates as we go...

Re: Project "Haulin' "

Looks sweet to me.

As to the roof replacement, do you know where they will make the slice? I just did my cab back & roof replacement a couple months ago on Homer and am very interested in where and how.
Any way you can get some pics? I think this is by far the easiest way to handle a rusty roof (or one with giant hole in the roof/cab back).

Re: Project "Haulin' "

Ok... Away we go... Yesterday I got the headliner along with all the other stuff off of the roof of the cab as well as the back window pulled out... We also got the replacement roof mostly prepped, we will finish that up today...

Jan decided She wanted to try her hand at welding so she welded the holes up that were around the back window of the donor roof where the guy that had the truck it came from for some reason had Snaps every 4-6" around the back window on the inside...

My mission for today is to replace the old worn out leaky Headers with new Dorman Exhaust manifolds and Flowmaster down tubes... Now my question for all of you is what is the torque specs for the manifold's...

Re: Project "Haulin' "

I did a quick search and found the following torque specs.
Exhaust manifold bolts:
Inner two bolts 30 pounds.
All others 20-25 pounds.
*Use anti-seize.

By the way Brian... I forgot to thank you for the torque specs... After I get it back from the glass shop Friday Night I plan on trying to get the Exhaust switched out...

Mechanical work is not a thing I like to do so this will probably take me forever... I put a water pump on it a couple weeks ago and it took me all day... Everyone else probably would have had it done in a hour... LOL

We got the truck back from the body Shop yesterday... started filling and block sanding the roof today and have it in final primer... tomorrow we are going to do the final block sanding and paint it... I will color sand it first thing early Monday morning and take it to the Glass ship to have the windshield and rear glass reinstalled...

Re: Project "Haulin' "

Alright... Had all of the paint work completed last night except the white pearl and Clearcoat Of which I completed today at lunch...

There are the pics of it with the roof painted... we spent about 35 hours total this weekend removing the hail dents in the roof and to paint it...

For your enjoyment here are a few pics of it before and After...

Re: Project "Haulin' "

Woah 35 hours removing hail dents, prepping and painting a roof, that's an insane amount of patients and attention to detail and you can tell it too it looks stellar.
I think the camera is playing tricks on me, it looks like the exterior paint line in back under the window walked a little bit when the tape was pulled, can you get some closer up pictures of that?

What you are seeing is the Paint divider Pins... I just masked it along the pins and as long as it was in between the lines I was fine with it... as it will not be seen once the trim is on...

Re: Project "Haulin' "

Ok... Here is a small update... Jan and I took a trek to Kansas City this weekend to take the Vent windows to a friend to be rebuilt and to Go to Classic Parts Of America to pickup some new Side Marker Lights and a couple of other items then Ran to LMC (which is rare for me because I really prefer Classic) and picked up a windshield mounted Mirror and New Body Side Moldings for the truck... I wasn't going to put new moldings on but what the heck 289.00 for a complete set I couldn't resist...

The Truck goes to Auto Worx Monday to get the Outer Floor, Inner and Outer Rockers replaced... At that time they will also remove the bed... I will being the truck home next Friday and will spend the weekend finishing the bodywork and finish painting the cab, doors, front fenders, hood and cowl panel and assemble it all... the following week Auto Worx will weld on the repair panels on the bed and I will pick the bed up on Friday and bring it home and finish it and paint it then it all gets put back together... Hopefully this time frame works but as always sometimes things do not go according to plans...

I will post some pics as we go through this process...

Thanks for following along on both of my trucks... we are in a holding pattern on Raymond but will probably have some forward movement on it in the next couple weeks.

Re: Project "Haulin' "

The truck went to the body shop Monday Morning and the hood and Cowl Panel went to the Media Blaster...

I stopped by the body shop yesterday afternoon to ask him to make a cut out of the drivers door of the doors that are on the truck as I have to fix a "speaker" hole In the replacement door.... While I was there he was showing me what he has accomplished in a day and a half... the rockers are off on both sides, the outer floor is cut on both sides, and the new parts are prepped ready to be installed... I suspect that by last night these were all clamped in place and ready to be welded... My guess is they will probably be completed by either tonight or tomorrow morning... He has not touched the bed as of yet and may not get to it until next week as I need the truck back Friday afternoon so I can go pick up the hood and Cowl and also deliver the seat to the upholstery shop to get the seat covered...

I am replacing the seat that is in the '71 with the flip forward seat of my '67... It is just a more comfortable seat... I will have a very nice Black '71 seat available for 250.00 picked up...

I had Chad Canning do some renderings of the 71 so I can see what it will look like here in a few weeks...

Enjoy...
