blazer tops 101 ???
What exactly is the difference between the single and double wall tops. I am assuming the double would be for cold climate conditions. Did you have to order it special. Was the single wall the standard top. Are there any asthetic differences between the two. Is the rear hatch the same on both? thanks boys

All the top's that I have seen have been double wall here in oregon.. I believe they have the same rear hatch and look a little more finished inside to me anyway's.. That;s all I got I have not been a blazer owner long so my knowledge is minimal..

As far as I know the biggest difference between the two types of tops is that the single wall top bolts in from the top down. A single wall top is preferred for its strength as well as the fact it can be removed without removing the side panels. The hatch is the same.
the double wall top is not as strong as the single wall top (I believe I am correct), And if you have rear side panels you would have to take them off to take the top off.

I've heard that the single walls are lighter as well(although I have no proof 'cause both of mine are single wall and heavy as h*ll!). I've seen both and know they look different on the inside too. The single walls have 'braces' that run side to side while the double walls have 'grooves' that run front to back. I've also heard somewhere that single walls were only available in 72, not sure if it's true or not. Hope my 2 braincells helped!

I have a 72 and it has a single wall top. I would imagine it is lighter than the double wall top. I haven't seen the inside of the double wall top but my guess is it does look better than the single wall.

Here is my singlewall. I have heard that they both have different bolt patterns too...Is that true? I took a doublewall top off mine and am going to put on this singlewall. I sure don't feel like having to drill new holes in my nicely painted blazer! Also the doublewall has a "seam" down the middle which seems to me to make it flex a little more. BOTH are heavy as heck!

In my experiences it has taken 2 men and near herniated testicles to remove a single wall!

I've taken the single wall top off by myself. I had a stack of lumber that was just about the same height as the tops of the bedsides. I unbolted it and then centered the top on my back and walked it back to set it on the wood pile. It can be done, but not without a situation like I had. You must have something the same height as your blazer. You could probably build a platform where this could be done.

I got my hatch from a single wall top. I think the hatch supports on the single wall top are longer than on a double wall, because the mounting bracket on mine doesn't line up with the old holes.does anyone have both types?

didn't know that about the hatch supports... I've seen a lot of double wall tops split on the seam down the middle and the seam across the front above the windshield.

So we have successfully unconfirmed that one top has lights and one does'nt. One has longer struts than the other, nobody knows if the hatches are the same, and both tops are too damn heavy???

I built 2 saw horses slightly taller than the rear seat and as long as the bed. Put them on each side of the truck. Unbolt the top. Lift one end and put a 2x4 across the saw horses at that end (you can do 1 corner at a time). Lift the other end and do the same. Drive away.
BTW, the double wall weighs about 450#.

I have swapped a rear hatch from a double wall to a single without any problem, so I believe they are the same.
Here's a cheap easy way to hang your top ! I can hang it myself without any pullys I stand up in the bed and lift it on my shoulders just enough to slip the 2x4 under, then I hook the front 2x4 on one side, push up the other side and hook it, then I lift and hook each of the rear corners separately. You don't need to lift it much (Maybe 2.5 " )so the thing doesn't get all tweaked out of shape. Then just drive away ! Last edited by Leinie; 09-03-2003 at 05:27 PM. |
