Engine year

I have a 72 Chevy C10 with a replaced 350. The guy I bought the truck from is not mechanically inclined so he had a mechanic friend replace the blown engine with another 350. He believes it's a 72 or 73, but not sure AND doesn't know if it came out of a car or truck.

Is there a way to identify the year of the engine and what it was originally in?

I want to know the year so I can get the correct filters and I need to replace a badly leaking timing chain cover/oil pan gasket.

Thanks for any help!

Ted

Re: Engine year

Hi Ted, welcome to the board. Grab these three numbers.
Block casting number, example, 3970010
Engine ID number, example, V0101TAX
V=engine assembly plant
01=month of assembly
01=day of assembly
TAX=application code
Block Date code, example, A012
A=month block was cast
01=day block was cast
2=year block was cast

If your block is from a car it will have a partial VIN number stamped on the pad, near the engine ID number. If your block is from a truck, before the mid seventies, it won't have a partial VIN stamped on it.
