steering column help with small plastic triangle pieces
I attempted to disable my tilt steering column today. I wanted to clean up the very crusty grease and give it a repaint and replace the gaskets that go over the shaft. Unfortunately I came to a point where I can't seem to get it apart any further. To make matters worse, two small plastic triangle pieces have come out and I'm not sure where they came from. I can't seem to locate them on the schematics. Can someone please help to identify the parts as well as give me some hints on how to put these back where they belong. I figured at this point, I'd just try to paint it as is. I'd really like to change the two rubber gaskets over the main shaft, but don't know how to do so at this point. Here is a picture of the pieces. They are not the same.... maybe a left and right???

They go behind the tilt release lever on the upper housing of the column. I will try to take a picture of them on one I have apart.

Re: steering column help with small plastic triangle pieces
Thanks 70shortfleet! I guess I'll have to end up taking that piece off after all. This was a stopping point for me yesterday. I guess I need to pull the two pins on the sides of it??? Already have the nut off on the shaft but am not sure about the bearing race and is there a shim? When I get it off, will it be obvious what holds them in? Thanks and sorry for so many questions.

Re: steering column help with small plastic triangle pieces
I was able to get it all apart. Mine looked a lot like the picture you posted. I think all the bearings are fine, but the grease is really thick and sticky. I want to paint everything put on the new gaskets, then re-grease and re-assemble
Anything special that I should use for grease? Also, how do you get those little triangle pads to stick in there? Thanks, Brian |
