Taking a step back to a 3ott and original motor....help wanted
Here again looking for some experienced help,
After looking at many trucks I find that most people are hotrodding them, which is great (383, 396, air bags...eat) But I have always wanted something different, a conversation starter. I am starting to think less is more for me, and I am not looking for something to race. I am going to take out that worm out 305 and put in a 283 I now have and a 3ott. Where the question comes is I have never worked on a 3ott so I am naive to what components I will need. I have a compelete 283 from a 1964 Chev, a 3 speed transmission, clutch pedal assembly, clutch and shift linkage, 3 speed Colomn. Still need to find are a bell housing, bell housing cross member, tranny crossmember, and clutch. You guys see anything I'm missing, I am hoping to do this over a weekend and want to try and avoid any major speed bumps. Correct me if I am wrong I will need to use the original forward mounting frame holes for the engine mounts? Mike

I cannot give you technical advice but I am glad I am not the only one that loves the stock things. My truck is a 250 3OTT and I have no plans (ever) of changing it.

I have to agree. I have the original 6 with 3OTT. In the sea of big blocks, small blocks, LS conversions. Mine stands out as different. I hate following the crowd with the latest trends.

Re: Taking a step back to a 3ott and original motor....help wanted
This is a thread I started over the weekend. Everyone constantly ask me, Why not put an automatic in it. After they drive it they know. The 3OTT is becoming a rare bird and mine with the Borg warner overdrive is even more rare. My 67 is identical to what my father taught me to drive on and it will always be a 3OTT. If you need any linkages let me know. I have some spares left off from my correction conversion. But if you want your truck to be V8 correct this is everything thats needed in my post. Hope it helps.

I don't believe you need a trans crossmember. The bellhousing crossmember is all that is needed.
I don't mind my 3ott, but I would like it better if there were parts available to either replace or rebuild my column. It is incredibly sloppy even with new bushings in the linkage and proper adjustment. I can move the shift lever 2 inches without the the linkage ever moving. It would also be nice to have overdrive. |

Only the bell housing cross member is needed for a three speed saginaw. Keep in mind there are two models though. The inline 6 and the v8. And it all depends where your engine sits. The v8 sit 2" further forward and requires different engine stands. Again all this information is in my write up

Yea, i don't know how I missed that. Stupid mistake. You post is very imformative! I shouldn't need any linkage, a local dealer near me had all of that stuff, it's not cheap but by time I pay shipping to Canada with our dollar currently it probably would end up being similar in cost
