What is the better way to clean up my hood hinges and latch?

I used a mix of electrolysis and Evaporust to clean up my hood latch bracket. It worked wonders and is now at the "paint stage."

I don't have any way to blast so that is out.

Will electrolysis harm the springs in the hood latch?

If I let the hood hinges and latch soak in Evaporust or Krud Kutter (phosphoric acid), need I worry about not being able to paint all parts later?

I disassembled my hinges, cleaned them with a wire brush, phosphoric acid and steel wool. I then painted them after rinsing with water and wiping with rubbing alcohol. I think you'll do fine as you suggest in your post. I don't see how the electrolysis would harm the springs.

OK, well good. My hinges are riveted together so I don't think I can take them apart.

The hood latch and hinges are awkward so it would be hard to paint all their inside pieces. Is that something to worry about?

Do I just grease them well after the cleaning?

Oops, I see what I said was a little misleading. I should have said I removed the springs. I did not totally disassemble the hinges.

They are awkward, especially with the springs still installed. With the springs out, I was able to change the hinge position for each coat of paint to get all hidden surfaces painted. I stretched the springs using a chain and my engine hoist, painted them, and let them thoroughly dry in the stretched position before reinstalling them on the hinges.

I did not do any disassembly on the hood latch. As I recall, I hung it from a wire and shot paint onto and into it at all angles.

I used 30 weight non-detergent oil as the lubricant after installing them.

I'll put the hood latch into some evaporust tomorrow and begin electrolysis on the hood hinges.

If you can't find a local plater try Kaehr Coating in Albuquerque - good work good price. Other members have used this plater. This finish is factory correct, durable, and relatively inexpensive. You would not believe how nice re-finished bolts look and there is no paint or powdercoat to fail. Good luck. Pete

You bet. You'll be more than pleased. There's a minimum order but that will do much if not all of what you need. I'd suggest door striker plates, hood hinges/latches, and a pile of OEM bolts. I may have my seat tracks done at some point. Send 'em as is greasy too. BTW- their zinc plating is very nice also: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=208

With mine i felt the rivits were not worn much but when i popped the hood release the hood would not lift so i just used some spray lube and it made a world of difference both for opening and hood adjustment..
