Pinion Angle after axle flip etc and caltracs Q
Finally got the rear axle flipped on my '79 shortbox and once I've sorted notching the frame will be fitting drop shackles and possibly a 1" block.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has done similar and if they shimmed, how many degrees etc. I shimmed my S10 last year using JTR parts but have found no concrete info on '73-'87 trucks (lots on '67-'72 in the search facility). I have looked at the possibility of raising the rear of the trans (M21) but the clearance is not there to allow. Also, has anyone used caltracs or similar on a slammed full size to stop axle wrap?

Cal trac bars seem like some down pinion angle. Depends on your goals with the truck

This might be a little more to the point:
The concept here is that you will need to measure the u joint working angles as shown above (same as the other attachments), and then do any shimming based on what you learn. Without doing that you are just shooting in the dark. K

Those are fine for daily driver stuff.
the cal tracs seem to like 2 or 3° down. At least my 73 did. Depends on the goals of the project

I never needed to adjust the pinion angle on my old 79 that was flipped with western chassie parts.

Flip, drop shackles and cal tracks on my 73 swb...didn't need or have to adjust pinion angle.
